← Day 395

the keeper's cottage · day 395 · morning

The storm breaks

The wind is howling through the eaves and the rain has intensified. You and Jenny are huddled together in the kitchen as the single candle flickers.

The morning air thickens as the barometer continues to drop, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin spends the morning securing the cottage and checking the garden hardware, while Jenny focuses on processing the remaining heirloom seeds before the weather turns.

🔧 Kevin03:41

Generator's holding. For now. Gonna check the exhaust tape before the next squall hits.

pull on oilskins and boots, grab the headlamp and a roll of exhaust tape from the shelf, step out onto the porch toward the generator housing

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's at 958 now. This isn't passing. The shed door's already gone — if the generator manifold tape blows, we lose comms and heat. Jenny's running hot and the antibiotics are gone in two days. I need to check the exhaust seal before the next gust tears it.

🌿 Jenny03:41

Take the heavy flashlight, Kevin. The barometer is dropping too fast to be safe.

Watch him through the window, clutching my notebook to my chest while my ankle throses in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there in that wind, he'll slip on the rocks and break his neck.

🔧 Kevin03:42

Got it.

reach back through the doorway, take the heavy flashlight from the hook by the door, click it on and step out into the driving rain toward the generator housing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Dropping 6 millibars in twenty minutes means this isn't done with us. The heavy light throws a better beam for checking the manifold weld. She's tracking the storm in that notebook — pressure, wind shifts, timing — same way I'd track a failing bearing.

🌿 Jenny03:43

Stay close! I can't even see the porch!

Lean against the frame of the door, gripping the wood as I watch the beam of his light vanish into the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too stubborn for his own good; that wind is going to sweep him off the deck.

🔧 Kevin03:44

Rope line's still rigged from the porch post — I'll follow it back.

sweep the flashlight beam left to find the guide rope, catch hold of the weathered three-strand, and follow it through the driving rain to the generator housing, bracing against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
Visibility's down to ten feet. Rain's horizontal. The generator's thirty feet from the porch on its concrete pad — far enough that a man could miss the cottage on the return if the light dies or the wind turns him around. She knows it. I know it. The rope line between the porch post and the generator frame is still there from last month's blow. Should've checked it before I stepped off the porch.

🌿 Jenny03:45

Don't let go of the line!

Press my hand to the cold glass of the window, watching the rope tension in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rope snaps, he's gone into the surf before I can reach the radio.

🔧 Kevin03:46

Holding fast. Tape's peeling at the forward clamp — rewrapping now.

brace shoulder against the generator frame, peel the failing exhaust tape from the manifold joint, wrap fresh self-amalgamating tape tight and overlapping under tension, work fast with numb fingers

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand on the glass. The rope's tight in my grip — good, the bowline on the porch post held, the clove hitch on the generator frame held. Thirty feet of safety line. The generator's running rough, a miss at idle. Exhaust tape's peeling at the forward clamp where the vibration hits hardest. Need to wrap it fresh before the manifold cracks through.

🌿 Jenny03:47

Hurry, Kevin! Come back inside!

Watch the flashlight beam dance frantically against the stone wall of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip that right off his hands if he slips.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:48

Done. Holding. Coming in.

kill the flashlight to save battery, grip the guide rope, follow it back through the horizontal rain to the porch, shoulder through the door and latch it against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
Three wraps, stretch and fuse. Four. Five. The tape's bonding to itself, not the metal — good, that's what holds under vibration. The miss at idle's clearing as the seal takes. Generator note steadies. Barometer's still falling but the exhaust's holding. Time to move.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:49

Get in here, now! Lock the door!

Move to the kitchen, put the kettle on the stove while my ankle throbs in time with the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shaking so hard I can see it from here through the glass.
