The Approaching Storm
The rain turns to a gale as the wind picks up from the west. The tide is at its lowest point, leaving the island floor slick with salt and debris.
The heat is oppressive as the sky thickens, signaling an approaching front. Kevin spends the afternoon maintaining the water filter to prevent sediment buildup, while Jenny manages the delicate process of drying the heirloom seeds on the kitchen table.
Backwashing the filter now. Then I'm down to the dock at low tide to check the prop and bracket before the water comes back up.
walk inside, grab the backwash bucket and hose from the shelf, head to the diesel drum at the porch edge

Be careful on the rocks. The tide is coming fast and the way is dropping too quickly.
Sit on the kitchen chair, prop my ankle up on a stool, and open the notebook to a fresh page for the sea beet sketch.

Won't be long on the filter. Dock check'll wait for the next low if the water's coming up fast.
connect hose to drum outlet, open valve, let the silt-laden diesel run into the bucket until it runs clear, close valve, disconnect hose, carry bucket to the porch rail to settle

The pressure is dropping too fast. Stay off the dock until the Analysis turns.
Sharpen my graphite pencil and begin sketching the cellular structure of the sea beet leaves.
