The Storm Breaks
The first heavy drops hit the tin roof, drowning out the sound of the wind. You sit together at the table, the smell of salt and broth filling the small space as the world turns grey outside.
The air pressure continues to drop as the overcast sky thickens over the island. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening inside the cottage preparing for the coming storm while Jenny begins her first dose of antibiotics.
Rain’s really coming down. Tank’ll fill quick.
listen to the rain on the roof, spoon in hand, waiting for the next bite of broth.

set spoon down, push back from the table, gather the damp notebook pages and sea beet sketches toward the seed tin shelf.
