Storm shutters and supper
Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as wind-driven spray hits the windward shutters. The barometer reads 974 hPa. Kevin has timber strips and a mallet for the final battening; Jenny brings the seed tins inside. A pot of limpet broth steams on the stove.
Kevin secured the windward shutters with timber strips and a mallet to brace against the coming storm. Jenny sorted the sea beet seeds and treated her ankle while the limpet broth simmered.
Hand me the strips and mallet. I’ll batten the windward shutters while you get those seeds safe inside. Broth smells good—let’s eat once we’re buttoned up.
Walk to the windward shutters, hold timber strip in place, and begin nailing it down with the mallet to secure the shutter against the spray and wind.

Just get them tight, Kevin. The wind is coming through the cracks already.
Jenny sets the sea beet tin on the kitchen table and places the heirloom packets on the high shelf where they won't get damp from the broth.

They'll hold. Just need the last two.
Finish battening the first windward shutter, then move to the second shutter and secure the timber strip with the mallet.

Hurry up. The barometer is at 973 and the air is getting heavy.
Jenny sits at the kitchen table, rubbing her throbbing ankle while watching the broth bubble on the stove.

Almost done. Watch the pot.
Drive the last nails into the second shutter, then move to the third windward shutter and batten it down fast.

The broth is almost ready. Just finish that shutter.
Jenny stands up carefully to stir the pot, wincing as the weight shifts onto her ankle.

Done in a minute. Sit back down—your ankle doesn't need the weight.
Batten the third and final windward shutter with the remaining timber strips, then set the mallet down and walk to the porch door to test the latch and hinges against the wind pressure.

I'm sitting. Just make sure the door doesn't rattle.
Jenny sinks back into the chair, wrapping her hand around her way ankle and watching the barometer needle drop further.

On it. Holding the door.
Press against the porch door to hold it shut, then grab the two-by-four vertical brace and wedge it firmly between the door and the floor to stop rattling and reinforce against the wind pressure.

It's holding for now. Just watch the latch.
Jenny reaches for the sea beet tin, pulling it closer to her on the table as the wind shakes the cottage walls.

Latch is solid. Brace takes the load. I'll check the dock lines at first light—earlier if the wind shifts.
Step back from the door, listening to the wind on the shutters, then walk to the kitchen table and ladle two bowls of limpet broth from the pot on the stove.

Don't go out yet. Just eat first.
Jenny takes the bowl of broth, the steam hitting her face, and looks at the own one last time.

Not going anywhere. Eat.
Sit at the kitchen table across from her, pick up the spoon, and start eating the limpet broth.

It's cold in here.
Jenny takes a sip of the broth, wincing as the heat hits her throat, and adjusts the gauze on her ankle.
