A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The evening settles heavy over the cottage as the dry heat lingers despite the overcast sky. Kevin finishes the labeling of the sea beet seeds while Jenny rests her infected ankle, watching the herbs dry on the porch.

Kevin — walk up to the cottage porch and push the door open

💭 peek at the thought
Back at the cottage. Evening light fading through the overcast. Need to check the whiteboard for the supply boat ETA, see if Jenny's awake and hungry. The Yanmar test went clean — vibration's gone. Dock ring held with the oak wedges and doubler plate. Good day's work. Now food.

The barometer is still dropping. Did you see anything?

Look up from the notebook, rubbing a smudge of graphite off my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back early, or maybe he just finished the engine. My ankle is throbbing.

983 when I left the dock. Steady. If it's dropping now, the front's accelerated.

walk to the radio shelf and check the barometer reading

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer was 983 and steady when I left the dock. If it's dropping now, the front's moving faster than expected. Supply boat's due in two days — that window might close.

🌿 Jenny12:09

It's at 978 now. I should have secured the tarp.

Wince as I shift my weight, leaning heavily back against the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always faster than I want. The pressure isheavy in my ears.

🔧 Kevin12:11

Tarp's deployed over the tomatoes. Garden wall's low on the seaward side — wind'll hit it hard. You need to stay off that ankle.

grab the heavy-duty tarp and timber strips from the porch and head for the garden

💭 peek at the thought
978 and falling. That's a five millibar drop in — how long since I left? An hour, maybe two. Front's moving fast. Tarp's already deployed over the tomato rows, but the garden wall's only two courses up on the seaward side. Wind'll funnel straight through. And Jenny's ankle — she's putting weight on it but that wince says it's not right. Supply boat in two days. If this blows up, they won't come.

🌿 Jenny12:11

I'll re-dress the gauze. Just watch the wind line.

Reach for the gauze and the first aid kit, moving slowly to avoid the sting.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but the garden is so vulnerable. I can't just sit here.

🔧 Kevin12:12

On it. I'll take the windward edge.

run the tarp's corner to the nearest oak stake and lash it tight with the timber strip, then move to the next corner along the windward side

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny's moving slow but purposeful. She knows the wind line — the gusts coming off the north cliffs will hit the garden first. I'll secure the tarp's windward edge, then check the seaward garden wall. If the tarp rips, the seedlings are done. Supply boat in two days — we can't afford to lose the crop.

🌿 Jenny12:13

Make sure the stakes are deep. The soil's too loose from the rain earlier this morning.

Sit on the kitchen chair, carefully peeling back the damp gauze from my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp catches, the sea beet seedlings are gone. I need to check the pressure again.
