Mid-morning planting and engine check

Kevin finishes his radio watch and walks to the dock to inspect the Yanmar mount and prop shaft for play after yesterday's load test. Jenny continues planting the second row with lettuce and basil heirloom varieties, working from the wheelbarrow to spare her ankle. The tide is still low, overcast holding, wind picking up from the southwest.

The morning air is heavy and still, the overcast sky pressing down on the garden. Kevin finishes checking the traps and resets them after finding them empty, while the tide continues its rise against the dock. Jenny is busy planting the heirloom seeds in the prepared beds, her movements slow from the dampness and the lingering fatigue.

🔧 Kevin13:25

Nothing. Just the creak of the dock under my boots.

Walk to the dinghy, crouch at the stern, and grip the prop shaft where it exits the hull — try to wiggle it side to side and up and down, feeling for any play in the cutlass bearing or shaft coupling.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's picking up — southwest means chop on the dock lines. I'll check the engine mounts first, then get low to sight the prop shaft. If there's play, it'll show in the cutlass bearing before it shows in the flange.

🌿 Jenny13:27

Prop's true, no play. But the basil's getting eaten.

work the wheelbarrow closer to the second row, drop lettuce and basil seeds with careful spacing, then walk to the dock to verify what Kevin found.

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle's throbbing rhythm syncs with the dock's creak — same frequency, different container of pain. Kevin's already checking what I was going to check next. Good. Means I can shift focus to the seeds instead of the failure.

🔧 Kevin13:27

Prop's solid. No play in the shaft or cutlass bearing. Vibration's not driveline.

Shine the penlight along the prop shaft as it turns slowly by hand, watching for any wobble at the flange and where it exits the stern tube — checking for bend or imbalance. Meanwhile, Jenny moves to the dock to verify my find.

💭 peek at the thought
Basil getting eaten — slugs or snails in the damp. I'll check the prop shaft runout while Jenny's here, then we can deal with the pests before they take the seedlings.

🌿 Jenny13:29

Check the trap again. And the prop's solid—no play. Check the trap again. And the prop's solid—no play.

walk to the garden shed, grab the snap trap and fresh corned beef bait, set another one near the basil row, then return to the dock to inspect the prop shaft flange with Kevin's penlight. </think>THOUGHT: The vibration's gone now that load'

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration's gone now that load's off — like the Yanmar's breathing easier. But my stomach's not. That basil's getting stripped bare, and I can't afford to lose another crop to rats. The ankle's throbbing sharper when I shift weight.

🔧 Kevin13:29

Trap's empty. I'll rebait and reset.

Walk back to the cottage, open the pantry door, check the snap trap — empty, bait gone. Rebait with fresh corned beef fat, reset the trap, and set it back against the shelf where the droppings are freshest.

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration's gone now that load test held clean. Prop shaft's true, no play in the cutlass. Jenny's right — check the trap again. Rat's still in the pantry if the trap's empty.

🌿 Jenny13:33

The prop is fine. I'm going back to the garden.

walk toward the cottage, pick up the seed tin from the shelf, and head back to the walled patch.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine is quiet, I can finally focus on the dirt, but this ankle is screaming at every step. I need to get those seeds in before the light fails completely.
