The Gathering Calm

The flat sky thickens over the garden as the air grows heavy and humid. Jenny sits on a crate by the garden wall, nursing her ankle while Kevin checks the tension on the shade cloth over the new tomato rows.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny14:03

Tighten the left corner another notch, Kevin. The wind will catch it like a sail.

Reaches for the notebook to sketch the jagged edge of a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops again, these seedlings will be drowned before the boat even arrives.

Copy.

walk to the left corner of the shade cloth, pull the tension line tight through the oak stake cleat, and secure it with a half-hitch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the left corner's got slack and the gusts are already lifting it. Better cinch it now before the front hits proper.

🌿 Jenny14:06

Good. Now check the drainage on the south side, it's pooling.

Unwraps the gauze from her own to inspect the redness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical with the knots, but doesn't see the rot starting.

🔧 Kevin14:06

On it.

walk to the south edge of the garden, lift the tarp where it's pooled, and wedge a flat stone under the corner to create runoff toward the drainage swale

💭 peek at the thought
Water's standing where the tarp sags — roots'll rot if we don't break the flow. Gotta fix the pitch before the next swell.

🌿 Jenny14:07

Watch the runoff. The salt spray is already getting into the dirt.

Presses the swollen skin of her ankle, flinching at the sharp heat of it.

💭 peek at the thought
If that water sits there, the soil will sour before the seeds even sprout.

🔧 Kevin14:07

I'll cut a trench if it's already brackish.

kneel at the south edge, scrape a shallow V-channel in the soil with the hand trowel to redirect runoff away from the tomato roots, then taste a fingertip of the damp earth to check salinity

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the salt line like I track bearing drift — she'll catch it before I do. The ankle's worse than she's letting on, but she won't stop working.

🌿 Jenny14:08

It's brackish. We need to move the beds closer to the wall.

Grabs the notebook and begins to sketch the morphology of the sea beet's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too salty. The island is eating everything I put down.

🔧 Kevin14:10

We'll shift the seedlings at low tide, when the wall's dry and we can move without sinking.

stand, brush dirt from my knees, and walk to the cottage to fetch the spare tarp and wooden stakes for temporary bed marking

💭 peek at the thought
She's already thinking three steps ahead — shifting the beds now saves us reworking later. Salt creep's inevitable; we adapt or lose the crop.
