low tide inspection

The tide has reached its lowest point, revealing the slick rocks and the tide pools. The rain has slowed to a mist, but the wind is picking up from the north.

Kevin went to the dock to secure the dinghy with a new stern line while the tide was low. Jenny stayed at the radio to listen for a signal while managing her throbbing ankle. Both failed to complete their tasks effectively due to fatigue.

🌿 Jenny14:30

The wind is turning. We need to secure the boat again before it comes in.

Winces as she shifts her weight off the left leg, then picks up the pencil to detail the salt way on the sea beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide stays out this long, I might reach the outer pools for more limpets, but my own feels like it's being squeezed by pliers.

I’ll go down and ring the bolts tight, then run a second line from the bitt to the ring. You keep the radio on Tom’s frequency—if he’s listening, he’ll hear us.

walk down to the dock, grab the wrench and spare line from the tool locker, check the tightness of the four through-bolts on the steel doubler plate, then secure a second stern spring line from the dinghy’s forward eye bolt to the dock bitt

💭 peek at the thought
The wind shift means the tide will start pushing in faster than I thought. The mooring ring held under load before, but with wind chop and rising water, I should double-check the bolts and add a secondary line. Jenny’s ankle is bad, but she’s still sketching—she’s tougher than she lets on.

I'll check the frequencies. Just don't let the boat slip.

Unwraps the bandage to inspect the ankle for new streaks, then stands shakily to move toward the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware while the rot is literally moving up my leg.

Bolts first. Then the line. Be right back.

tighten the four 150mm stainless through-bolts on the steel doubler plate with the torque wrench set to 35Nm, then splice the spare half-inch three-strand rope into a second stern spring line from the dinghy's forward eye bolt to the dock b

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle looks worse than she's saying. Red streaks tracking up the calf means the antibiotics aren't holding. She's moving anyway. I'll secure the dinghy fast and get back to check it properly.

🌿 Jenny14:32

Be quick.

way at the radio desk and tune the dial to Tom's frequency, listening to the static.

💭 peek at the thought
35 Newton-meters. Precision for a boat while my body is losing precision.

🔧 Kevin14:33

(nothing — focused on the splice)

finish the long splice on the half-inch three-strand rope, serve the eye with sail twine, shackle it to the dinghy's forward eye bolt, lead it aft to the dock bitt and take up the slack with a rolling hitch

💭 peek at the thought
Four bolts, quarter-turn each past finger-tight. The doubler plate doesn't move. Good. Now the spring line—long splice, served with sail twine, takes the load off the ring. Wind's backing northwest. Tide turns in twenty minutes.

🌿 Jenny14:34

Jenny — jenny presses a hand to the radio receiver, listening for a break in the white noise while the infection thumps in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way but static and the wind. The island is breathing louder than he is.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:34

Line's on. Boat won't drift. I'll check the ankle when I'm back—clean it, rewrap.

walk back up the jetty to the cottage, grab the antiseptic, clean gauze, and the antibiotic blister pack from the shelf by the door

💭 peek at the thought
She's listening hard. The static is deep—no voice, just hiss. If Tom's out there, he'd need power, antenna, and a reason to call. We've sent four letters. No reply. I don't say it, but I keep the radio working for her.
