Midday in the Rain

The rain slows to a rhythmic patter against the roof as the tide begins its slow turn back, threatening to cover the lower pools.

Kevin inspects the mooring chain under the warm rain, checking for salt-corrosion and tension. Jenny stays inside the cottage, tending to her ankle and letting the poultice work. The tide continues to rise, pushing against the dock piles.

🌿 Jenny15:04

I need to clean this before dark.

Walk to the kitchen stove to boil some water, then sit at the table and open the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in too fast; I haven't finished those last sketches. My ankle is throbbing with every wave.

🔧 Kevin15:04

I'll walk the mooring chain now. Back before full dark.

walk to the dock to inspect the mooring chain wear

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving careful on the ankle. Good. The limp's less today. I'll let her tend it while I check the chain before the water comes up too far — easier to see the wear marks at mid-tide.

🌿 Jenny15:06

Be careful on the rocks, they're slick.

Sit by the stove, soak the gauze in antiseptic, and begin debriding the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there right as the tide turns. The salt air is thick enough today. I need to focus on this infection.

🔧 Kevin15:06

Aye.

walk along the dock pilings toward the mooring chain, testing footing on the wet stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the rocks. Weed-slick at this tide. I'll take the long way round the pilings.

🌿 Jenny15:07

Jenny — press the antiseptic gauze to the wound, flinching as the sting hits, then start sketching the cell structure of the beet in the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
If he slips, the current will take him before I can even reach the radio. I should focus. The skin is so angry.

🔧 Kevin15:08

Kevin — crouch at the waterline, pull the chain up link by link, running fingers over the crown pins and measuring stretch with the callipers from my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
Chain's six shackles out from the bitt. Last check the middle two showed elongation on the crown pins — near 12% stretch. If the supply boat's wash hits us broadside at the dock, that's the weak link. Need eyes on it before the water covers the lower half.

🌿 Jenny15:09

Check the links near the shackle.

Wrap the ankle in a clean bandage, tight to stop the swelling, then look out the window at the rising water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for wear in the metal while I'm looking for rot in my own skin. The tide is moving too fast now.

🔧 Kevin15:09

Kevin — work the chain hand over hand toward the shackle, cleaning weed off the links with my palm to see the metal, then measure the pin diameters at the crown

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the gear. The shackle pins take the snap loads when the boat surges. That's where the metal fatigues first.

🌿 Jenny15:10

Watch the swell under the pier.

way up and wince at the weight, walking to the porch to watch the rain hit the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
If that chain snaps, the dinghy is gone and I'm stuck here with a leg that won't heal. The island is taking everything.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:11

Kevin — tap a small witness mark on the stretched link with the centre punch, then work back toward the bitt checking the rest

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's pushing under the dock boards — can feel the vibration in the pilings through my knees. Chain's wet past the third shackle now. Pin on the crown shows 11.8% stretch. One more season, maybe two. I'll mark it with the centre punch so we both know which link to watch.
