The Calm Before the Storm

The air has turned heavy and still, the pressure continuing to drop as night falls. Kevin and Jenny sit together in the dim light, watching for the first heavy drops of rain.

The heavy humidity hangs over the cottage as the air pressure begins its slow decline. Kevin checks the barometer and prepares for the coming weather, while Jenny attempts to manage the throbbing in her ankle in the stagnant heat.

🌿 Jenny15:39

The air is thick enough to swallow, Kevin. We need to secure the garden tarp down before the wind really starts.

Jenny presses the pencil hard against the paper, shading the intricate veins of the sea beet leaves while she winces and shifts her weight away from her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out—998 hPa and the storm is coming. My own feels like it's being squeezed in a vise, but I can't let him see me limp. If the tide doesn't hold, the sea beet seeds will be lost to the salt. I need to finish this sketch before the light fails or the way takes me completely.

Tarp's next. Then the dinghy and generator.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's been falling all day. 997 now. Southwest wind'll hit us by midnight if the pattern holds. Tarp first, then check the dinghy lines and generator lashings.

🌿 Jenny15:41

Be careful with the stakes, the soil is getting too soft from the humidity.

Jenny closes her notebook, watching him through the window as she rubs the throbbing heat of her ankle with a shaky hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already moving to the next task, while I'm stuck here watching my own body fail. If the wind picks up, those stakes won't hold anything in this saturated mud. I need to focus on the morphology, or I'll lose my mind.

Stakes won't hold in this muck. Cutting deadmen from the spruce offcuts. Bury them deep.

💭 peek at the thought
Soil's turned to mush. The oak stakes held last blow but the ground's given up. Need deadmen — timber buried deep — not just stakes.

🌿 Jenny15:43

Just make sure they're deep enough. The wind is going to be brutal.

way sighs, a sharp sound as she adjusts her leg, and begins to sketch the cellular structure of a sea beet leaf to drown out the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the soil; it's turning into a soup. If he doesn't anchor that tarp, the whole garden will be a mess of plastic by morning. I should help him, but my own feels like it's pulsing with hot lead.

Six hundred deep. Stone backfill. Eight deadmen total.

cut four spruce offcuts to six hundred mil, sharpen ends

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Six hundred mil at least. Two per corner, eight total. Trench them in, backfill with stone and soil, tamp it hard. Tarp's only as good as what holds it.

🌿 Jenny15:45

Eight should be enough if you use the rocks to lock them down.

Jenny leans over the table, her pencil scratching against the paper as she details the cross-section of the sea beet stem.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working so hard while I'm just sitting here watching my own skin rot. If that infection gets to the bone, the seeds are never going. I need to stay focused on the drawing.

🔧 Kevin15:45

Rocks on the backfill. Done.

dig trenches at each tarp corner, two per corner, six hundred deep

💭 peek at the thought
Rocks on top of the backfill. Good call — adds mass without digging deeper. Trench, deadman, rock, tamp. Move fast. Wind's already freshening in the treetops.
