Drying and Pressure

Jenny sits at the table spreading the damp heirloom seeds onto paper to prevent mold. Kevin checks the barometer, noting the steady drop to 993 hPa as the sky darkens overhead.

The air has turned heavy and humid, the flat sky darkening as the storm front moves in. Kevin has scrubbed the salt from the south porch door frame with vinegar, leaving the wood damp and waiting in the salt-heavy breeze. Jenny sits at the table, sketching the intricate morphology of a sea beet leaf while managing the throb in her ankle, the barometer continuing its steady drop.

The air is getting heavy, Kevin. Check the seals on the porch again.

Jenny reaches for the tweezers to carefully lift a cluster of sea beet seeds from the damp paper, wincing as the movement jars her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops further, the rain will be way, and I won't be able to reach the garden tomorrow.

Already on it. Porch first, then the ring at low water.

walk to the porch door and examine the weatherproofing seals along the frame, testing each corner for give or gaps

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's fallen another point since I last looked. Wind's backing west too. She's right about the porch — and about not saying the rest. I'll check the seals, then the mooring ring again at low tide. The wedges held last night but this pressure drop means surge.

🌿 Jenny16:47

Watch the south-facing frame; the salt is seeping through the wood.

Jenny leans back in the chair, rubbing the heat radiating from her ankle while watching the clouds thicken over the island.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up, the spray will ruin the sea beet before the boat even gets here.

🔧 Kevin16:49

Seen it. Salt tracks in the grain. I'll strip and re-bed before the front arrives.

fetch the putty knife and epoxy tub from the kitchen shelf, then start scraping the failed caulk from the south-facing door frame, working methodically from bottom to top

💭 peek at the thought
South frame takes the worst of it. Salt eats the grain, lets water track in behind the batten. I'll need to strip the old caulk, let the wood breathe, then re-bed with epoxy mix before the real rain hits.

🌿 Jenny16:49

Make sure you get the grit out of the grain or the epoxy won't take.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins to sketch the morphology of a sea beet leaf, her hand steady despite the throb in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get that seal tight, the humidity will rot the last of the heirloom seeds.

🔧 Kevin16:51

Vinegar wash first. Then brush. Let it dry proper.

grab the wire brush and vinegar jar from the workbench, scrub the salt from the wood grain along the south frame, then wipe it down with a clean rag and leave it to dry in the porch airflow

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Epoxy over salt is a waste of time. Need to brush it clean, maybe hit it with vinegar wash to neutralize, let it bone dry. The tub's nearly empty anyway — just residue from the dock repairs. Might have to stretch it with sawdust filler for the deep tracks.
