The Approaching Storm

You and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first gusts of wind pick up. The tide is lapping against the pilings.

The steady rain beats against the cottage as the atmospheric pressure drops sharply, signaling an approaching storm. Jenny stays inside to manage her swelling ankle while Kevin prepares the interior and checks the outdoor gear for the coming weather.

🌿 Jenny17:23

The tide is coming in high. We should check the latches on the porch.

Reach out and touch the edge of the ink line on my calf, checking for the heat of the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The red is moving faster than I thought. If it hits the knee, I won't even be able to walk to the radio.

Porch latches first. Then I'll check the ring at high water.

walk to the porch door and test the latch, listening for wind in the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's backing west harder now. Barometer's dropped three more millibars since I last looked. Tide's pushing against pilings that have seen forty winters — the ring held last cycle but the chain's worn thin at the crown. She's checking my leg instead of the porch latches. The infection line hasn't moved past the ink mark in two hours. That's something.

🌿 Jenny17:25

Be careful on the stairs, the wind is catching the door.

Wrap the bandage tight on my ankle, wince as the pressure flares against the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the dock while I'm worried about my own blood turning to poison.

🔧 Kevin17:25

Stay off the stairs. I'll check the ring. You watch the barometer.

step onto the porch, brace against the door frame, and test the latch with my shoulder before securing it

💭 peek at the thought
She's wrapping her own ankle and wincing like it's mine. The wind just took the door from her hand — heard the hinge complain. Stairs are slick with salt and rain. She shouldn't be on them. Neither of us should, but the ring won't check itself.

🌿 Jenny17:27

It's at 988 hPa. Don't stay out too long, the wood is slick.

Lean over the table to watch the needle on the pressure gauge, my hand trembling slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. If this storm hits, I won't be able to get to the boat.

🔧 Kevin17:27

Back in ten minutes. If it drops past 985, wake me.

descend the porch stairs carefully, boots testing each tread, and walk toward the dock through the rising wind

💭 peek at the thought
988 and still falling. Her hand's trembling — cold or the infection creeping? The porch latch held. Door's solid. Now the dock. The ring shifted last low tide despite the oak wedges. If the chain parts at the crown under this surge, the dinghy goes and the dock follows. Need eyes on it at high water.

🌿 Jenny17:29

987 already. Stay dry, Kevin!

Peel back the damp bandage, biting my lip as I inspect the angry-purple streaks tracking toward my shin.

💭 peek at the thought
The red is definitely an inch higher than it was an hour ago. If it reaches the knee, I'm stuck here.

🔧 Kevin17:29

(shouting back over wind) Watch the line! Don't let it cross the ink!

reach the dock, crouch low against the planking, and shine the headlamp on the mooring ring and chain crown at the waterline

💭 peek at the thought
987. Dropping faster now. She's peeling her own bandage back at the table while I'm halfway to the dock — can see the purple streaks in my mind, tracked them with pen two hours ago. If they've crossed the line, the doxy isn't holding. She needs the metronidazole and she needs to stay off it. Dock first. Then back for the antibiotics.
