← Day 408

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday at the cliffs and dock

Kevin stands at the dock checking the chain marks; Jenny sits on the north cliff path with her sketchbook, ankle throbbing.

The humidity is a physical weight, clinging to the skin as the pressure drops. The tide is rising, pushing salt water against the rotting pilings of the dock, which groans under the strain. Inside the cottage, the silence is heavy, broken only by the steam of tea and the muffled sound of rain beginning to fall as Kevin watches the spreading redness on Jenny's leg.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dock rail, chalk in hand, marking each worn crown link on the mooring chain. The rain falls warm and steady, washing the chalk almost as fast as you lay it. You calculate the greenheart offcuts stacked on the dock — enough for a sister plank, if the bolts hold.

🔧 Kevin16:59

Kevin — pocket the chalk, secure the weather line's bitter end to the cleat with an extra turn, and walk back up the path to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Chain's worn to a third at the crown — maybe four links before failure under surge load. Greenheart offcuts are straight enough for a sister, but the bolts are the problem. Only two 150mm stainless through-bolts left from the mast bracket job. Need four minimum. Could scavenge the 10mm steel bolts from the failed dock repair, but they pulled out of soft timber once already. Might have to drill and tap the piling for longer thread engagement, or sister both sides and through-bolt the whole assembly. Tide's rising — no more work here today.

🔧 Kevin17:03

Chain's down to a third at the crown links. Greenheart's there for a sister plank, but only two long bolts left. Need four. Tide's up — can't do more today. Barometer's 989. Wind backing southwest. Water'll stack against the dock face.

set the hammer and chalk on the workbench, pull out a chair opposite Jenny, and reach for the tea pot

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down harder now, drumming on the porch roof. Jenny's at the table with her notebook, the sea beet sketches spread out beside a mug of tea. She looks up when the door closes — doesn't ask what I found at the dock. Knows I'll tell her if it matters. The barometer on the wall reads 989. Dropped two millibars since I came in. Wind's backing southwest, steady now, not gusting. That's the direction that piles water against the dock face. Chain won't take another surge like the last one.

🔧 Kevin17:07

Tea's good.

sip from the mug, watch the rain streak the window, and let the silence settle

💭 peek at the thought
Tea's strong, black, two sugars. She made it the way I take it without asking. The rain hammers the roof steady now — not a squall, a proper front. Jenny's ankle is propped on a stool, the dressing clean, no red lines tracking up the calf today. The antibiotics are working. She's back to the sea beet sketches, pen moving slow and careful. Salt gland morphology. She's been at it for days. The radio sits silent on the shelf behind her, the new insulator holding. I haven't tried Tom's frequency since dawn. My turn at dusk.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You sit on the flattened rock at the cliff path, sketchbook on your knee, the sea beet specimen vial beside you. Your ankle pulses in time with the swell below. You draw the salt glands at 40x, but your hand shakes. The metronidazole is in the cottage. Six days to the boat.

🌿 Jenny17:01

Stay still, Jenny. way stay still.

Trace the edge of the redness on my calf with a felt pen, marking the current border.

💭 peek at the thought
If the red reaches the knee, I won't be able to walk to the radio next week. I can't let the seeds rot.

🌿 Jenny17:05

No, no, no...

Close the sketchbook abruptly and stand up, shifting my weight to my good leg to begin the slow descent back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The ink is already past the mark I made twenty minutes ago. It's moving faster than it should.

🌿 Jenny17:09

Jenny — reach across the kitchen table to find the first aid kit and the bottle of metronidazole, my hands trembling.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is radiating off the skin now. If I don't get that medicine in me, I'm going to be bedridden tomorrow. everSAY: Come on...
