← Day 409

the keeper's cottage · day 409 · night

securing for the night

You and Jenny return to the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain fall. The wind begins to howl through the old shrine stones.

The rain continues in a steady, rhythmic drumming against the roof of the cottage. Inside, the air is humid and smells of salt and drying sea beet. The shutters are now dogged down, muffling the sound of the wind, though the leak above the shutter still drips rhythmically into the galvanized bucket.

Radio's dead anyway. Come on — let's get the shutters dogged and the generator tied off.

walk to the cottage porch, unhook the storm lantern, and start securing the south-facing shutter with the timber strips and batten screws

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer still falling. Need to get the cottage buttoned down and check the dock lines before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny18:25

I've got the other side. Just... give me a second.

limp toward the porch, leaning heavily on the doorframe for support.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for my leg. I can't keep up, but I can't let him do everything while I just lean against the wall.

🔧 Kevin18:27

Take the inside. I'll do the outside battening. Less climbing.

hand her the cordless drill and the box of batten screws from the porch bench, then step down to the grass to reach the upper shutter hinges from ground level

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring that leg bad. Infection's tracking. Every step costs her.

🌿 Jenny18:27

Fine. Just don't strip the heads.

take the drill and screws, then hobble inside to the south shutter and start driving the screws into the interior frame.

💭 peek at the thought
"Less climbing." He thinks I'm a porcelain doll. But he's right about the leg. I'll just do it faster than he expects.

🔧 Kevin18:29

Won't strip them. Pilot holes are clean.

climb the short ladder to the exterior shutter, drive the remaining batten screws through the pre-drilled holes into the stone lintel, checking each one seats flush against the timber strip

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got the drill. I'll take the weather side — harder work but keeps her off the ladder.

🌿 Jenny18:29

Jenny — drive the final screw into the interior batten, then lean back against the whitewashed wall and exhale slowly, clutching the drill.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so meticulous it's exhausting. I can hear the drill humming through the wall; he's probably counting the rotations.

🔧 Kevin18:31

One side down. North shutter next, then the generator lashings.

descend the ladder, set it against the north window, and start the exterior battening on that side while the rain thickens

💭 peek at the thought
She's done. Breathing hard. That leg's taking a beating just standing there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:31

I'll get the lashings ready.

set the drill on the table and limp toward the porch to check the generator straps.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting heavier. If the wind shifts now, the north side is going to take the full force of it.
