← Day 410

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Afternoon storm preparations

Kevin is at the dock finishing the shackle pin work and inspecting the Yanmar mount; Jenny is in the garden planting heirloom seeds and managing damping-off.

Kevin finishes securing the spruce mast on the dock, but the vibration from the Yanmar persists, suggesting the mast bracket or the prop shaft alignment is still off. Jenny returns to the cottage from the garden, tending to her ankle and planting the first batch of heirloom seeds while the air remains heavy and the tide begins to rise against the dock pilings.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You wipe grease from your hands and step into the dinghy to run the Yanmar at half-throttle, feeling for the vibration above 1800 RPM. The prop shaft spins true with the bronze sleeve. The mast bracket alignment is still slightly off but the through-bolts hold. You'll need to test under load before the storm hits.

🔧 Kevin18:59

Kevin — kill the Yanmar, climb back onto the dock, grab the 10mm wrench and check the through-bolt tension on the mast bracket

💭 peek at the thought
Engine runs clean at half throttle. Vibration's gone — bronze sleeve did its job. But the mast bracket still sits cockeyed. Under sail load it'll torque the transom. Need to true that bracket before the front hits, or the sister knees take the strain.

🔧 Kevin19:03

Kevin — loosen the four through-bolts on the mast bracket, lift the spar just enough to drive two tapered cedar shims under the heel where it sits on the doubler plate, then retighten the bolts finger-tight plus quarter turn, checking alignment wit

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts are snug but the bracket's still off — water's worked the greenheart soft. If I don't correct it now, the next gust will split the sister plank or tear the transom. Gotta pull the bolts, shim the heel, and reset it true.

🔧 Kevin19:07

Kevin — fetch the spruce mast from beside the cottage, walk it down the dock, step the heel into the bracket, pin it, then hoist the sail and hank it on the forestay

💭 peek at the thought
Bracket sits true now. Shims bit hard, bolts torqued even. Spar's plumb to the transom. That'll hold under canvas. Need to step the mast and bend on the sail before the wind freshens — slack tide gives maybe forty minutes.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You firm the soil over the last pepper seed and straighten, breath fogging in the cooling air. The tomato stakes hold. You mix a fresh copper spray batch and treat the remaining pepper and lettuce cells, then move the seedling trays under the porch eave for shelter. The sky darkens to the west.

🌿 Jenny19:01

Stay down, Jenny. Stay down.

Walk back to the cottage, wipe the soil from my hands, and check the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the final arrives, these seeds are just mulch.

🌿 Jenny19:05

Jenny — go to the stove, heat the remaining limpet broth, and pour it into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
Hunger is a hollow ache now. I need to fuel up before the weather turns completely.

🌿 Jenny19:09

Jenny — walk to the porch and look toward the dock to see if Kevin is still there.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is getting too heavy. I can't just sit here and listen to that bucket drip.
