the old shrine · day 412 · night

First light at the shrine

Dawn breaks grey and wet over the standing stones. The barometer reads 976 hPa and falling. Kevin kneels beside the dinghy's chain at the water's edge, propane torch hissing against the shackle pin in the slack water hush. Jenny watches from the shrine's shelter, ankle wrapped and elevated on a folded tarp, the first dressing change of the day complete.

Kevin heated the chain shackle pin with the propane torch at slack water, bringing it to cherry red after thirty seconds, then worked it free with the heavy wrench. Jenny monitored the barometer, which read 975 hPa and rising, and checked the red line on her ankle, finding it had not spread beyond the marked boundary.

Holding. Give it thirty seconds more.

💭 peek at the thought
Heat's taking. Pin's glowing dull red at the shoulder. Corrosion'll break before the chain does. One good hit with the drift after.

Don't let it overheat. You'll ruin the temper.

Lean back against the stone, tracing the red line on my ankle through the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the metal. Everything is a mechanical problem to be solved with heat and force. My leg isn't a shackle pin.

Counting. Twenty more.

keep heating shackle pin, watching for cherry red colour

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Cherry red's the limit. Any hotter and the galvanising fails, then the steel weakens. Counting seconds in my head.

🌿 Jenny21:25

Pressure's falling, Kevin. 976.

Shift my weight slightly, wincing as the ankle pulses.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is slipping again. If it drops further, the wind will shift and the slack water won't matter.
