The Rising Pressure

Kevin sits on the porch chair as the cloud cover thickens over the island. Jenny watches the de-salted notebook dry on the table while Kevin checks the barometer reading. The air is heavy with the scent of coming rain.

Kevin and Jenny shared coffee at the cottage table while the barometer rose to 981 hPa. Jenny checked the red lines on her ankle and ate limpets. Kevin prepared to check the mooring ring shackle at high water and run the Yanmar at half throttle to verify the vibration fix.

Supply boat's due in ten days. Barometer says the window might hold. We'll check the shackle at high water.

stand from the porch chair, stretch the stiffness from my shoulders, and walk to the kitchen to check the water tank level and start the stove for coffee

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's up another point. 981. Rising slow but steady. Front's pushing through, not settling. Good. Means the supply boat might actually make its window. Means the crossing won't be a wall of green water. Still need to check that mooring ring shackle at high water — oak wedges are holding but the mortise is soft. And Jenny's dressing at 0800. Red line hasn't moved. That's the only number that matters today.

🌿 Jenny22:27

I'm not doing the shackle today. I can barely put weight on it.

Lean back against the cot and pull the blanket over my ankle, watching him move toward the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's calculating windows and shackles while I'm calculating how many more days I can keep this leg from failing me. He sounds so sure of the barometer.

🔧 Kevin22:29

Didn't ask you to. I'll go at high water. You do the dressing at 0800. Log the line.

fill the kettle from the tank, set it on the stove, and pull two tin mugs from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's not doing the shackle. Never said she was. I'm doing the shackle. She's doing the dressing — her own leg, my hands if she needs. That's the arrangement. Has been for weeks. Her ankle's bad. Mine's not. Don't need to speak it.

🌿 Jenny22:29

I'll log it. If I wake up before then.

Trace the red line on my ankle with a finger, checking if it has moved since last night.

💭 peek at the thought
0800 is too early for a body that feels like wet lead. He treats me like a project that needs a strict schedule.

🔧 Kevin22:31

You'll wake. Coffee'll be ready.

light the stove with a match, set the kettle on the hot plate, and lean back against the counter watching the flame catch

💭 peek at the thought
If I wake up before then. She says it like it's a joke. Like she hasn't been waking every four hours for weeks. Like the doxycycline and metronidazole aren't sitting on the shelf with the gauze and the antiseptic cream. Like the red line hasn't held at the pen mark for three days straight. She's tired. We're both tired. But the line hasn't moved. That's the only thing that matters.

🌿 Jenny22:31

I hope the coffee is stronger than the barometer's promises.

Reach for the limpets on the stove and slide them into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
Such certainty. He speaks as if the world is a clock and I'm just a gear that needs oiling.

🔧 Kevin22:33

Coffee's strong. Barometer's just a guess.

pour hot water into the two mugs, spoon coffee grounds in, let them steep

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's promises. She's right to mock it. 981 and rising don't mean the boat comes. Don't mean the crossing's safe. Don't mean the ring holds. Only means the pressure's climbing. Could drop again by afternoon. Could stall. Could lie. Been at sea long enough to know a barometer's just a guess with numbers. Coffee though — coffee's real. Tin's sealed. Water's hot. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:33

A guess that usually decides if we're trapped for a week or not.

Slowly push myself up from the cot, favoring the left leg, and limp toward the table to check the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
A guess. At least he's admitting it. But he's still the one holding the mugs.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:35

We're not trapped. We're stocked. The boat comes or it doesn't.

hand her a mug of coffee, black, no sugar, and take the other for myself

💭 peek at the thought
Trapped for a week. Or two. Or three. The supply boat's missed its window before. Storms, engine trouble, the trust's budget, the skipper's daughter's wedding — always something. We've got 629 days of food for two. Water's full. Wood's stacked. The Yanmar runs. The dinghy floats. The radio works. We're not trapped. We're waiting. There's a difference. She knows it. I know it. The ankle's the only thing that could change the math.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:35

Stocked doesn't mean much if I can't walk to the boat.

Sit at the table and take a slow sip of the coffee, staring at the red lines on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Stocked. As if having enough flour and beans will stop the infection from reaching my heart. He doesn't see the rot inside of me.
