Evening at the Rising Tide

The rain slows to a drizzle as the tide begins to creep toward the northern shelf. The window for seed collection is closing.

Kevin inspects the shackle pin on the dock as the tide begins to rise against the pilings. Jenny prepares the limpet meal at the cottage and sketches the sea beet morphology in her damp notebook.

🌿 Jenny01:09

The tide is turning.

Jenny limps to the porch, clutching her notebook, and watches out at the grey water.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get those samples now, the salt will wash them away for another week and my ankle is throbbing too much to walk far.

🔧 Kevin01:09

Give me the list. I'll go.

pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab canvas bag and knife from the hook by the door

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's pushing in. Northern shelf will be under in twenty minutes, maybe less. She's limping harder today — the red lines haven't moved but the swelling's up. She wants those seeds. I want her off the rocks.

🌿 Jenny01:10

It's not a list, Kevin. It's a map.

Jenny pulls the notebook close to her chest and stays put on the porch, her face going quiet.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm a patient. He thinks this is about a grocery list and not a survey.

🔧 Kevin01:10

Then draw it. I've got the bag.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, waiting

💭 peek at the thought
She's not letting me go alone. Not with the ankle. Not with the tide coming in. The map's in her head and she knows it — every cluster, every elevation. She's deciding whether to trust me with it or come herself.

🌿 Jenny01:13

I need the northern shelf, specifically the crevice. Don't just rip them out; take the roots and the surrounding soil.

Jenny opens the notebook to the sea beet morphology page and holds it out for him to see, pointing firmly at the coordinates.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating me like a child. He doesn't understand that if he just grabs things blindly, he'll destroy the context of the growth.

🔧 Kevin01:13

Roots and soil. Crevice on the northern shelf. Got it.

take the notebook, study the sketch, tuck it into oilskin pocket, grab the garden fork from the porch corner

💭 peek at the thought
She's serious about the roots. Means she's thinking propagation, not just seed. Smart. The crevice on the northern shelf — I saw it at low tide two days back. Deep cut in the rock, sheltered, soil holds moisture. Plants there were thick. Tide's rising now though. Water'll be knee-deep in the cut within ten minutes.

🌿 Jenny01:15

Be careful with the paper.

Jenny watches him leave, her hand still hovering in the air where the book had been.

💭 peek at the thought
He's taking the notebook. My notebook. He'll probably get salt spray on the pages or drop it in a pool.
