Morning, Day 417

The rain continues to tap rhythm against the roof as the tide reaches its high mark. Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock to inspect the stubborn shackle pin.

Kevin used the propane torch to apply thermal shock to the rusted shackle pin while applying leverage with the wrench. Jenny watched from the dock, monitoring the swelling in her ankle while waiting for the heat.

🔧 Kevin01:33

Slack in twenty minutes. Pin expanded earlier — contraction might crack the rust. Going to hit it hard on the turn. Stand clear of the wrench swing.

grip the heavy wrench, plant feet on the wet timber, wait for the water to hesitate at the turn, then drive body weight down on the handle

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's peaked. Pin's still bound. Metal's hot from the torch earlier — if I hit it now with the big wrench while the contraction pulls, thermal shock might break the corrosion lock. If it shears, we lose the seaward mooring. No spare shackle heavy enough for the supply boat's bow line.

🌿 Jenny01:33

Just don't slip. The planks are slick.

Lean against a piling, clutching my ankle, and watch the wrench handle.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping from hunger, but I can't look away. If that pin doesn't move now, we're stuck with a dead boat.

🔧 Kevin01:35

Not planning to.

hold the wrench at full extension, breath steady, feel the tide hesitate — then snap the handle down hard and fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the wrench, not the pin. Smart. Means she's tracking the leverage point, the slip path. Ankle's holding weight on the bad leg — either the antibiotics are working or she's better at hiding it than I am.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Did it move?

Lean forward, squinting at the pin to see if it shifted.

💭 peek at the thought
That sound... it was either the rust breaking or the housing giving way. Please let it be the rust.

🔧 Kevin01:36

Micrometre. Maybe. Rust's singing a different note now.

peer close at the pin shoulder, wipe salt crust with thumb, tap the pin head with the hammer to test rotation

💭 peek at the thought
Pin didn't scream. Didn't give that sharp crack of broken corrosion. Just a dull groan deep in the iron — moved maybe a millimetre. Enough to tell me the heat worked. Not enough to call it free.

🌿 Jenny01:37

Give it one more time. Use the full leverage.

Watch the gap between the pin and the housing, holding my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's even a hair, the heat is working. I need that boat to move.

🔧 Kevin01:39

Once more. Then penetrating oil soak overnight.

reset the wrench, choke up slightly for control, drive down with everything — legs, back, shoulders — hold the pressure at the bottom

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. One clean hit while the metal's still warm from the last expansion cycle. The contraction's working for us now. If it shears, it shears — but it won't. The groan said the bond's broken, just needs the final push.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:39

Hold it. Don't let it spring back.

Grip the piling tighter, staring at the shackle with a botanist's focus on the smallest shift.

💭 peek at the thought
I can see the metal straining. Come on, just one more millimeter.

🔧 Kevin01:41

She's broken. Working the threads now.

keep steady pressure, rotate the pin a full turn clockwise, then back half a turn, repeat — chasing the rust, feeling for grit

💭 peek at the thought
Pin rotated. Felt the corrosion threads let go in stages — first a grudging screech, then a sudden smooth turn. It's free. Not pretty, but it's moving. Now I need to work it back and forth, chase the rust out of the threads before it seizes again on cooling.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:41

(Laughs softly) I told you the heat would do it.

Relax my shoulders and let out a long, shaky breath.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The sound of the threads clearing is better than any music.
