The Approaching Front

The tide reaches high water. The sky has turned a bruised purple and the first cold drops of rain fall.

The flat sky thickens into a bruised purple, and the air turns heavy with the scent of coming rain. The tide is at its peak, lapping hungrily against the rotting dock pilings. Kevin and Jenny have secured the dinghy away from the jetty just as the first heavy drops of rain hit the hot wood.

🌿 Jenny02:31

Kevin, the rain's here. We need to move.

Limp toward the dinghy and start grabbing the loose equipment.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If we don't get the gear off the dock now, the surge will take it.

🔧 Kevin02:31

Right behind you. Grab the dry bag and VHF — I'll secure the dinghy lines and the shackle.

Tie off the dinghy's second stern spring tight to the mooring ring, then double the warp around the south piling. Check the shackle pin one last time — if it's moved at all, mark it with chalk so I know the housing's shifting under load.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's early. Tide's at the top. Shackle housing won't hold another cycle if the surge hits. Need to secure the dinghy and get the radio gear under cover before the wind picks up.

🌿 Jenny02:33

Hurry. The dock is bottoming.

Reach for the dry bag and the radio, wincing as the weight shifts on my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he lets that boat go, we're stranded. My ankle is screaming from just shifting the weight.

🔧 Kevin02:33

I've got the bag. Keep the radio dry — I'll lash the dinghy to the windward piling and check the shackle one last time.

Run forward and seize the dinghy's bow line to the northern mooring bolt with a round turn and two half-hitches, then take a strain to hold her off the rotting planks.

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's taking the full surge now — every groan is a plank giving way. If the shackle fails, we lose the mooring and the dinghy swings into the rocks. Can't wait for slack water; the storm's here.

🌿 Jenny02:35

Forget the shackle, Kevin! Just get the lines tight!

Clutch the radio to my chest and lean heavily against a piling, staring at the purple horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with that pin. He's going to get swept off this jetty if he doesn't stop tinkering and get inside.

🔧 Kevin02:35

Aye. Bow and stern to the pilings, off the dock entirely.

Sling the stern line around the seaward piling base, cinch it drum-tight with a trucker's hitch, then run back and snug the bow line to the north bolt — dinghy floating free of the jetty. Grab the dry bag from her and shoulder it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Shackle's a lost cause — if it shears, the whole dock goes. Best bet is lashing the dinghy independent of the ring, and getting her off this structure before a piling snaps.

🌿 Jenny02:37

Come on. The wind is turning.

Pivot toward the cottage, favoring the good leg with every step on the slick grass.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat is secure. Now we just have to get back before the sky really opens up.

🔧 Kevin02:37

Short steps. Lean on me.

Hook an arm under her shoulder, take her weight on the bad side, and start up the path — slow, deliberate, testing each footfall on the wet grass.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest — that'll drive the surge straight up the channel. Dock's had it. Need to get her up the path before the grass turns to slurry, then batten the cottage and the generator. Radio's the lifeline; if the aerial holds, we can still call out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:39

I've got it. Just... don't let me slip.

Lean into him, keeping my weight shifted and gripping the radio tight.

💭 peek at the thought
I hate being a burden, but I can't actually walk. The dampness is making the joint throb.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin02:39

I've got you. Watch the crossover at the big rock — water runs deep there.

Shorten stride, lock my knees on the downhill side of each step, plant the boots flat — heel, toe, pause — making a shelf for her to follow. Keep the dry bag high on my shoulder, clear of the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
Her grip's white-knuckled on the radio. Ankle's holding but the compensation's killing her hip — I can feel it in how she favours each step. Path's got a bad camber halfway up where the water sheets across. If she goes down there, we both do.
