Storm Night
Heavy rain hammers the roof and the wind shudders through the walls. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table, the storm lantern throwing long shadows. The dinghy's lines creak and snap in the dark beyond the window. The barometer on the wall reads 978 hPa and still falling. Neither has spoken about the evacuation letter in the radio box.
The rain continues its steady, rhythmic pulse, drumming against the cottage roof as the tide rises against the pilings. The air is thick with the scent of salt and wet earth, the wet season humidity clinging to everything. Inside, the water tank is nearing its capacity, and the barometer holds steady at 983 hPa, confirming the storm front is approaching but not yet arrived.
Barometer's 978 and falling. Starboard bow spring just parted. Dock's taking the full fetch now. I'm going to check the mooring ring bolts before the next surge.
pull on oilskins and boots, grab the heavy wrench and headlamp, step out onto the porch into the driving rain

Be careful. The tide is coming in too fast. Take the handheld radio, just in case.
Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and watch him disappear into the grey wall of rain.

Handheld's on the dinghy. I'll take the headlamp. Back before high water.
descend the porch steps into the driving rain, headlamp beam cutting a narrow cone through the grey, walk fast along the dock planking toward the seaward end where the mooring ring sits in its mortise

The radio is right here, Kevin!
Walk to the window, pressing a palm against the cold glass, and watch the beam of his light dance across the explanation water.

Right. The shortwave.
turn back toward the cottage, snag the shortwave handset from the shelf by the door, clip it to the oilskin belt loop, head back out into the rain toward the seaward end of the dock

Stay on the channel if the ring slips again!
Grab the notebook and pencil from the kitchen table, sitting on the edge of the chair to watch the water rise over the pilings.
