Night of Day 421

The wind picks up, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dry earth. You huddle together under the shelter of the shrine as the storm finally breaks.

The rain intensifies into a heavy downpour, drumming loudly against the roof of the old shrine as Kevin and Jenny retreat toward the cottage. The air cools with the coming western wind, and the barometer continues to dip to 978 hPa, signaling a worsening storm front.

🔧 Kevin05:38

Come on. Cottage first. Tea and dry socks.

stand slowly, testing weight on both knees, and offer a hand to Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer was right. Again. Rain's cold through the wool, and my knees are stiff from sitting on stone. Jenny's quiet beside me — ankle's holding but she's favoring it. Should get her back to the cottage before the path turns to slick clay.

🌿 Jenny05:39

I'm coming. Just don't rush.

Take Kevin's hand and pull myself up, wincing as the weight shifts onto the infected ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and the barometer is dropping faster than I like.

🔧 Kevin05:40

Not rushing. Your pace.

adjust grip to support her weight on the good side and start walking down the ridge toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding how bad it hurts. The wince, the breath held — I know that silence. Doxy's working but the joint's still hot. Path down the ridge gets treacherous in rain. Need to go slow, let her set the pace, but the wind's rising and the temperature's dropping.

🌿 Jenny05:41

Check the barometer when we get inside.

Lean heavily on Kevin, keeping my eyes on the muddy path to avoid a slip.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip the roof off the shed if I don't check the latches.

🔧 Kevin05:42

First thing through the door.

navigate the slick clay path down the ridge, shortening stride to match Jenny's pace, one hand braced on her waist ready to catch a slip

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the trend same as me. 978 steady when we left the shrine — but that was an hour ago. If it's dropped below 970, the front's deepening faster than forecast. Wind'll back northwest by midnight, bring the real chop. Need eyes on the dial before I lose light.

🌿 Jenny05:43

I need to check the tin for moisture.

limp toward the cottage door, shielding my eyes against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'm going to lose everything.

🔧 Kevin05:44

Tin's under the tarp on the porch. I'll get the barometer, you get dry.

push the cottage door open, guide Jenny inside toward the stove, then turn to the radio shelf where the barometer hangs

💭 peek at the thought
The seed tin. Right. Damp's the enemy — damping-off's already spreading in the trays despite copper spray. She's thinking ahead while half-lame and soaked. That's her. Tin's on the porch under the spare tarp, but the wind's driving rain horizontal now. Could wait until morning, but she won't.

🌿 Jenny05:45

I'll get the way first.

sit on the kitchen chair and start peeling the wet bandage to look at the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is at 976 and still falling. This is going to be a bad one.
