A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Inside the cottage, the air is heavy with the scent of drying sea beet and damp paper. Kevin hunches over the island notebook, the loupe magnifying the pressed sea beet leaf as he re-counts the salt glands. Jenny sits opposite him, her ankle throbbing visibly as she shifts her weight, watching his hand move while she continues her sketch of the flower structure.

🔧 Kevin06:04

(quiet, to the room) Kettle's hot if you want a top-up.

walk to the kitchen table, pull out the island notebook, open to the sea beet salt gland sketches, pick up the ballpoint pen, start writing up the transect data in clean hand — elevation, species counts, salt gland density per zone

💭 peek at the thought
Back in the dry. The rain's hammering the roof now — proper storm sound. Kettle's still hot from the limpet broth. Need to check Jenny's ankle at noon like I said, but that's an hour off. Radio schedule at 1400. Between now and then: log the sea beet transect data proper, check the seed trays for damping-off spread, and see if the barometer's still holding at 976.

🌿 Jenny06:05

Thanks, Kevin. Just let me finish this page first.

Lean back in the chair, shifting weight off the swollen ankle, and keep the pen moving steadily across the damp paper.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, but the data won't wait. If I don't record the morphology now, it's lost to the humidity.

🔧 Kevin06:06

(settling onto the stool opposite, notebook open) Take your time. I'm just copying transect numbers before the ink blurs.

write the sea beet transect data into the island notebook — zone by zone, elevation markers, salt gland counts per leaf sample, the tide pool topography references from the cairns

💭 peek at the thought
She's logging the garden data — damping-off counts, seed tray positions, what survived the night. Good. Means she's not thinking about the ankle. The pen scratches steady; her hand's not shaking. Doxy's doing its job.

🌿 Jenny06:07

Watch the salt gland counts on the north ridge; the density was higher than I thought yesterday.

Point to the specific entry in the notebook while sketching a quick, detailed diagram of the sea much flower structure to show him the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually helping for once. I need to keep these numbers straight or the whole survey of the island will be a mess.

🔧 Kevin06:09

(leaning over the page, pen hovering) North ridge, 12-meter cairn — you counted 23 glands per mm²?

tap the relevant line in my notebook, correct the figure from 16 to 23, add a small asterisk and "J — verified" in the margin

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — north ridge samples ran 40% denser than the mid-slope. I caught it in the field but didn't transfer it clean. Good catch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:09

Yes, 23. My eyes were playing tricks in the light.

Cross out the old number with a sharp line and write 23 clearly, then continue the sketch of the stamen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. I must have been counting shadows when the fog rolled in yesterday.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:11

(quiet) Good catch. I'll run the full set through again at the 18-meter mark before I close the page.

flip back two pages to the 18-meter cairn entry, compare the salt gland count scribbled there against the pressed leaf sample tucked in the notebook's fold, verify the number with a loupe

💭 peek at the thought
Light plays tricks on everyone out here. Salt haze, low sun, tired eyes. She caught it anyway. That's the work — catching each other's errors before they set hard.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:11

Check the 18-meter mark specifically; the soil shifted near the drainage.

Watch him work for a moment, keeping my hand steady even as my ankle throbbed under the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the data is wrong, the whole survey is worthless. I can't let the infection make me this way.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:12

(eyes on the loupe, voice low) 18-meter. Noted.

adjust the loupe over the pressed leaf from the 18-meter cairn, count salt glands methodically across three fields of view, murmur the numbers under my breath, write the confirmed count beside the old one with a second asterisk

💭 peek at the thought
Soil shift at the drainage — means the microhabitat changed since the last transect. Could explain variance. She's tracking the variables I'd miss sitting at a bench.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:13

It's 23. I'm sure now. The light was bad yesterday.

Reach for my pencil pencil and start the fine Detail on the sea beet flower.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful. I need to be just as meticulous before the way takes all my focus.
