Evening in the Storm

The kettle is steaming on the stove as the wind howls through the shutters. The mess in the pantry needs immediate attention before they prepare for the supply boat arrival tomorrow.

The rain continues its steady rhythm against the cottage roof, and the water tank has finally reached its maximum capacity. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the barometer remains stubbornly at 980 hPa, signaling that the storm is still a few hours away.

Kettle's ready. Come get some tea before it goes cold.

Pour the boiling water into two tin mugs and set them on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't think straight on an empty stomach, but the thought of that rat in the pantry makes my skin crawl. Everything needs to be sterile and sorted before tomorrow.

Thanks. I’ll have a cup after I check the pantry. Rat’s back in there.

Grab the crowbar and rat trap from the shelf, then stride to the pantry door, yank it open, and shine the LED headlamp inside to see the damage and locate the rodent.

💭 peek at the thought
The rat’s in the pantry, shredding paper and grain. I need to secure it before it ruins more stores—especially with the supply boat due tomorrow. Jenny’s offering tea, but I can’t sit yet.

Be careful with the crowbar. It might be behind the flour.

Sit at the table and rub my throbbing ankle, watching the steam rise from the mugs.

💭 peek at the thought
If that thing gets into the seed tins, I'll lose my mind. I'm too weak to chase a mouse around the kitchen.

Flour's gone. Crowbar's for the shelf if it's warped shut. I'll set the trap proper.

Set the crowbar down, pick up the rat trap baited with corned beef, and place it along the pantry baseboard where the droppings run. Then pull the bottom shelf out to find the entry hole.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — flour's chewed through already, contaminated. Crowbar's too blunt for this. Need the trap and something to seal the entry after.

Check the seed tins first. They're on top.

Stand up slowly, leaning on the table for support, and walk toward the pantry doorway.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's in the flour, it's in the seeds. I need to move the tin to the high shelf.

🔧 Kevin07:17

Stay at the table. I'll check the tins. Your ankle doesn't need the damp floor.

Step into the pantry, headlamp beam sweeping the top shelf — locate the heirloom seed tin, the rusted 'E' tin, and the grandmother's seed tin. Check lids and seals for gnaw marks or breach.

💭 peek at the thought
Seed tins are priority — heirloom stock and the tin marked 'E' from the shrine. If the rat got into those, months of work gone. Jenny's moving slow on that ankle; I should keep her at the table, not hovering in the doorway.

Checking now.

Lift the blue heirloom tin from the top shelf, turn it in the headlamp beam — inspect the lid seal, the soldered seam, the bottom for any gnaw-through.

💭 peek at the thought
Blue tin — that's the heirloom one with tomato and pepper packets. She's watching close. Good. Two pairs of eyes on the irreplaceable stuff.
