The Turning Tide
The rain slows to a light drizzle as the tide begins its slow retreat from the dock. Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage, the smell of damp wood and drying herbs filling the air.
Kevin sits at the kitchen table to carefully debride the infected tissue from Jenny's ankle under the steady glow of the LED lamp. Jenny holds the light despite the pain while the tide recedes outside the cottage.
Kevin — walk to the porch door and look out at the dock, checking the tide line and the mooring ring from here first.

The tide is going out at least.
Sit on the kitchen chair, lift the swollen ankle onto the table, and prepare the antiseptic and the heavy-duty tweezers.

Want me to hold the light? Or the gauze?
Move to the kitchen counter, pick up the LED headlamp, and click it on — setting it beam-down on the table near her knee without asking.

Just hold the light steady. Don't move.
Soak a gauze pad in antiseptic and begin to debride the edge of the infection.

Kevin — keep the headlamp beam fixed on her ankle, not moving, not looking away, breathing slow through my nose.

Stay right there.
Wince silently as the tweezers catch the inflamed tissue, focusing on the edge of the red swelling.

Kevin — not move. Not speak. Keep the beam dead steady on the wound, shadowless, watching the tweezers work the angry margin.

It's almost done.
Press the antiseptic-soaked gauze to the site and wipe away the debris.
