The Rising Surge

Kevin and Jenny are sheltered under the porch as the storm intensifies. The tide is dropping, exposing the rocks near the dock.

Heavy rain lashes the cottage from the west, forcing the pair inside as the storm builds. Jenny rests her throbbing ankle while Kevin monitors the falling barometer and prepares for the expected supply boat arrival.

The pressure is dropping again. It's going to get worse.

Trace the edge of the swelling on my ankle, wincing as the fabric rubs the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show tomorrow, I'm going to run out of antibiotics before this infection stops eating my leg.

Mooring ring's holding. North piling's the worry.

walk to the porch edge and lean out, watching the dinghy surge against the lines, checking the angle of the stern spring and the mooring ring under load

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's been falling all day. She's right — it's going to get worse before it breaks. The dinghy's riding hard on those new lines, but the north piling's still floating on that scoured void. When the tide drops another foot, the sister plank'll take the full weight. If the oak wedges in the mooring ring hold, the dock survives. If they don't...

Check the tension again. The surge is pulling harder than it did an hour ago.

Watch the line strain against the wood, hand tightening my grip on the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way goes, the dinghy is lost and I'm stuck here with a rotting leg.

Stern spring's singing. Ring's not moving — yet.

step down off the porch onto the slick stones, crouch at the dock edge where the stern spring leads to the mooring ring, press my palm against the mortise joint feeling for any play as a surge hits

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The surge interval's shortened — wind against tide now. The stern spring's taking the brunt. If the mooring ring shifts in its mortise, the doubler plate spreads the load but the oak wedges are the only thing keeping it from working loose. Should've driven them deeper at low water.
