← Day 434

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the woods

Midday work at dock and woods

Kevin is at the dock preparing tools and materials to repair the mooring ring mortise; Jenny is in the woods starting the north ridge Carex transect.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dock's north end with the mallet, auger, and a greenheart offcut. The mooring ring shifts under your weight. The tide is rising fast, lapping the sister plank bolts. You have until the water covers the mortise to drive a proper greenheart wedge and re-bolt the ring fast.

🔧 Kevin17:34

Kevin — kneel at the mooring ring, test the mortise depth with the auger bit, then drive the tapered greenheart wedge hard with the mallet until it seats tight in the softened timber.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's rising faster than I'd like. Mortise wood is punk — oak wedges split, cedar crushed. Greenheart's the only thing dense enough to hold in this rot. Need to drive the wedge before the water covers the joint, then bolt through while I can still see the holes. One shot at this before the supply boat comes.

🔧 Kevin17:39

Kevin — drill clearance holes through the greenheart wedge and mooring ring flange with the 12mm auger, drive the two 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to 35Nm while the tide is still low enough to work.

💭 peek at the thought
Wedge is seated. Mortise wood held long enough for the greenheart to bite. Now the tide's licking at the bolt holes — got minutes before I'm working blind. Need to drill through the wedge and ring flange, drive the stainless bolts home, torque them down. Sister plank's greenheart too; bolts go through both. If the threads catch in sound timber below the rot, this ring isn't going anywhere.

🔧 Kevin17:42

Kevin — test the mooring ring under full body weight, confirm zero shift, then inspect the dinghy's forward spring line chafe guard at the bow eye before walking back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts are home and torqued. Nylocs seated. Ring doesn't move when I hang my weight on it. Tide's covered the mortise now — water's over the sister plank bolts. Job holds. Supply boat can tie up without ripping the dock apart. Need to check the dinghy's forward spring line chafe point while I'm down here, then get back to the cottage. Jenny'll have the kettle on.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You follow the faint game trail up the north ridge, the first stone cairn marking your start. The notebook is tucked under your arm, pencil ready. Overcast light makes the sedges hard to distinguish — you'll need to key them by leaf sheath and ligule. The wind carries salt spray this high.

🌿 Jenny17:34

Jenny — kneel on the damp earth, pull a sample of Carex, and begin own the leaf morphology in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to get this transect started before the sky really opens up or the paper will be ruined anyway.

🌿 Jenny17:37

Jenny — wipe the sweat from your brow with the back of a hand and sketch the fine hairs of the sedge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping, and my ankle is starting to throb with every movement.

🌿 Jenny17:41

Jenny — check the barometer one last time and note the drop in the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain hits now, I won't be able to see the plant details clearly.
