Pre-Rain Preparation

Warm rain patters against the roof as the air grows heavy with the wet season. Jenny sits on the bench, wrapping the fresh gauze around her ankle while Kevin checks the tension on the garden tarp lashings.

The morning rain continues to taper off as the tide reveals the rocky flats. Kevin spent the morning preparing the dinghy transom for the bronze sleeve center-drilling, while Jenny focused on drying the heirloom seeds and managing the garden's seedlings in the humidity.

The knots are too loose, Kevin. The wind will catch the edge by noon.

Move the seed tin and sea beet sketches to the highest shelf above the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is holding, but the humidity is an enemy to the sketches. If I don't get these drawings dry, the paper will pulp and rot.

On it. I’ll retighten the corners and add a half-hitch to take the slack. You keep elevating that ankle—looks like it’s holding.

walk to the southwest corner of the garden tarp, pull the lashing tight, retie with a taut-line hitch, then repeat at the southeast corner; add a half-hitch to each standing part to lock the tension; check the north and west edges for lift,

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s falling, rain’s warm and steady—this front’s stalling. Jenny’s right about the tarp; if the wind gets under it, it’ll tear the stitches or pull the stakes. I’ve got to retension it now before it flaps loose and shreds. Also, she moved the seed tin and sketches up—good call. Keeps them dry and safe from damp and rodents. I’ll fix the tarp, then check the crate at low water if the tide lets me.

It's the wind-shear, not just the slack. Make sure you double-knot the grommets.

Lift my leg to check the temperature of the skin around the bandage.

He thinks it's just the slack, but it's the vibration that kills you. If that tarp rips, the heirloom seeds are gone before they even sprout.

Figure-eight on each grommet, double-overhand to lock. Gives it shear resistance. Your leg—how’s the heat?

move to the northeast grommet, thread the lashing through, tie a figure-eight knot, finish with a double overhand; repeat at the northwest grommet; then do the same at the southeast and southwest grommets; pull all lines taut and secure the

💭 peek at the thought
Wind-shear means the tarp’s lifting at an angle—grommets are the weak points. If they tear out, the whole thing goes. I’ll reinforce each one with a figure-eight loop and a double overhand knot. Jenny’s checking her ankle—skin’s probably hot, maybe throbbing. She’s being careful, not complaining. I’ll work fast but solid.

🌿 Jenny19:19

It's cooler. way don't let the wind get under the lip.

Reach for my sketchbook to sketch the specific morphology of the sea beet leaves while the light is decent.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is fading, but the throb is still there, like a clock. I need to focus on the sketches.
