← Day 436

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the woods

Midday at the Island

Kevin is at the dock checking the transom fit, while Jenny is in the woods gathering fallen wood.

Kevin works at the dock attempting to salvage timber from the low-water crate, but the high tide makes it inaccessible. Jenny tends to the garden, securing the shade cloth against the persistent warm rain and wind.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You hold the bronze sleeve against the transom holes, ensuring the fit is flush for the epoxy work.

🔧 Kevin19:35

Kevin — mix the last of the epoxy and bed the bronze sleeve into the transom holes, wiping excess clean with a rag

💭 peek at the thought
The bronze sleeve sits true in the transom holes — center-drilled, measured, ready. Epoxy's nearly gone, just residue in the tub. Need to mix what's left careful, no air pockets. Tide's high now, gives me time before the water drops and I can test the fit under the boat.

🔧 Kevin19:40

Kevin — wipe hands on a rag, set the epoxy tub aside, and walk back toward the cottage to check on Jenny and the garden

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy's setting. Good bond, no voids I can feel. The sleeve won't move now. Tide's turning — water sucking back off the flats. Give it another hour to cure proper, then I'll bolt the engine mount and run the Yanmar at load. Radio check's due tomorrow anyway. Might raise the trust on schedule if the barometer holds.

🔧 Kevin19:44

Kevin — walk up the path from the dock to the cottage, stepping over the muddy ruts

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's easing to a mist. The cottage chimney's drawing smoke — Jenny's got the stove going. Good. She'll be at the table with the seed trays or the notebook. My ankle brace is holding, no chafe. The bronze sleeve cure time's about half done. I'll check the garden shade cloth corners while I'm up there, then head back down for the engine mount bolts before low water.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You limp toward the tree line, testing your weight on the good leg while looking for dry spruce branches.

🌿 Jenny19:39

Kevin, if you're hearing this, I'm going to the woods for dry spruce. The bronze sleeves aren't going to center-drill themselves.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection's spreading faster than the antibiotics can catch up. I need to find clean wood before the rain gets worse.

🌿 Jenny19:43

Focus, Jenny. Just one more step.

wipe sweat from brow with a sleeve, pause to inspect a fallen branch for rot

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is a drum. If I can't get to the ridge, I'll never finish the transect.

🌿 Jenny19:47

damn it, stay dry just once.

lean against a screw pine trunk, breathing heavily until the throbbing in my ankle subsides

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is picking up again. If I don't get back soon, the notebook will be ruined pulp.
