Evening meal and radio check
Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table, sharing a meal of boiled limpets and sea beet. The kettle is reheated, and Kevin prepares to try the shortwave radio at 0400 hours to contact Tom about the supply boat's ETA.
The humidity in the cottage is heavy, a thick weight that clings to the skin and clothes. Outside, the flat sky has bruised into a deep purple, and the thickening clouds promise the end of the heat. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the shore, while the interior air grows still with the scent of salt and coming damp earth.
Make sure the antenna is clear before you broadcast, the salt is heavy tonight.
Jenny traces the edge of her way page and winces as the throbbing in her ankle spikes.

Already checked. Cleaned the porcelain at sunset. Salt's thick but the tape held.
Finish the last of the limpet broth, set the tin mug down, and stand to walk to the radio shelf.

Don't push the signal too hard if the static is acting up.
Jenny picks up her pencil and begins to sketch the cellular structure of the sea much's margin.

Won't. Just the scheduled check. Weather, position, ETA. Nothing else.
Switch on the shortwave, let the tubes warm, and adjust the squelch while the dial glow steadies.

way him the barometer is dropping. The storm is coming early.
Jenny shifts her weight, trying to hide the wince in her ankle under the table.

It's holding at 980. You feel different?
Glance at the barometer on the bulkhead, then key the mic on 2182. "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Kilo-Victor-Three-Niner-Zero, over."

I'm just tired, Kevin. The heat is heavy.
Jenny presses the pencil down on the paper, shading the salt area of the sea beet leaf.

Kilo-Victor-Three-Niner-Zero, Sorrel Island. Requesting weather update and supply vessel ETA. Barometer nine-eight-zero steady. Over.
Hold the mic off, listen through the static. The receiver hisses — atmospheric noise, not distant voices.

Maybe they're not listening. The clouds are thick.
Jenny pulls her knee up to her chest, avoiding the rubbing of the fabric.

They're listening. Just propagation. Night skip's different.
Wait the standard interval, then switch to 4125. "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, Kilo-Victor-Three-Niner-Zero on four-one-two-five. Weather and supply boat ETA. Over."

Check the frequency again. The air feels dead.
Jenny closes her notebook, staring at the seed tin on the shelf.

Dead air. Skip's gone.
Set the mic down, flip the power off, and pull the notebook from the shelf to log the failed contact.
