The Heat Before the Rain
The tide continues to climb toward the dock as the first heavy drops of rain finally hit the broad leaves.
Kevin felled the spruce crown and butt sections with the bow saw, using the come-along to control each cut and ease the trunk off the path. The root plate settled without shifting the spring basin. Jenny kept the heirloom seed packets dry under her jacket and monitored the anchor line while Kevin worked.
Going to need the come-along on the butt end once I cut the crown free. You good here?
walk back to the cottage to fetch the bow saw, come-along, and axe

I'm fine. Just watch the tension on that branch.
Tighten the bandage on my ankle and wince at the sharp pain.

Yeah. Cutting the crown first, then the butt. Won't touch the tension limb till the weight's off.
grab the bow saw, come-along, and axe from the porch and walk back to the spring path

Be careful. If that spruce shifts, it'll take the whole

Crown to butt. Then the springer. Then the root plate. I know the order.
set the come-along anchor on the standing spruce uphill, run the line to the fallen trunk's butt, and start the first cut on the crown branches with the bow saw

Watch the line. Don't let it snap back.
Pull the heirloom seed packets under my jacket to keep them dry from the spray.

Snubber on the line. I'll ease it.
saw through the first crown branch, letting the weight settle onto the come-along slowly, then ratchet the tension off before the next cut

Watch the anchor. The mud is slick.
Lean back against the stone basin and watch the water trickle from the rock.
