The Arrival of the Rain

The rain begins in earnest, drumming on the tin roof and washing the dust from the air. Kevin and Jenny are inside by the light of the stove as the wind whistles through the dock moorings.

Kevin sealed the kitchen window draft with glazing compound and cracked the stove door to vent the heavy air. Jenny inspected the heirloom seed packets, finding them damp but viable with no new mold, and rewrapped her ankle dressing more securely.

reach for the stove door latch, lift and set it on the first catch so the door sits ajar an inch, feel the immediate pull of cold air across the floorboards, turn back to the window and press the putty bevel once more with a thumb.
