The Calm Before Rain

Kevin sits on the bench checking the barometer as the mercury drops to 978 hPa. Jenny sits at the table, spreading the damp heirloom seeds onto paper to dry while the wind shifts to the north.

The morning light is filtered through a heavy, oppressive grey sky. The air is thick with humidity, smelling of salt and impending rain. At the dock, the tide is at its peak, lapping steadily against the newly reinforced pilings, while the barometer continues its slow, steadyly drop.

🌿 Jenny00:40

It's down to 978. Secure the latch.

Spreads the seeds more carefully on the newspaper and rubs the throbbing in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; the storm is going to hit before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin00:41

On it. I'll double the lines and check the north piling.

walk to the dock, grab the spare half-inch rope, and begin doubling the dock lines with a round turn and two half-hitches on each cleat, then move to the north piling to inspect for rot or settling.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's falling fast—978 and still dropping. Wind's shifted north, which means pressure's not recovering. If it holds under 980, I need to double the dock lines and get that second bow anchor ready before the tide turns. Jenny's ankle's flaring again—she's rubbing it raw. I should check the poultice, but first, the dock.

🌿 Jenny00:41

Watch the tide line on that own, the wood looks heavy.

Picks up the pencil and begins a detailed sketch of the sea much's salt glands in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wood he doesn't notice the air turning cold.

🔧 Kevin00:43

Seen it. Low tide's in two hours—I'll wedge the piling then. You need the poultice changed?

finish doubling the last dock line, secure the bitter end to the landward cleat, then walk back toward the cottage to check Jenny's ankle and the medical supplies.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the north piling's sitting lower than yesterday. The tide line's crept up another inch on the greenheart. If the scour's deepened, the sister plank won't hold. I'll need to wedge it at low water and maybe drive another oak stake beside it. The wind's steadying northeast now, cold with it. Rain'll come before dark.

🌿 Jenny00:44

Not yet. It's still holding for a bit.

Flinches slightly as she shifts her weight, keeping her eyes fixed on the sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is deep today, I can feel the heat radiating off it through the gauze.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:45

Generator lashings next. Then the porch door. You holler if it throbs.

walk to the generator shed, pull the ratchet straps tight on the frame, check the exhaust tape, then move to the porch door and batten it with the spare timber strips and the heavy tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
She's masking it. The flinch was small but real—ankle's worse than she's saying. Doxycycline's only had one dose; metronidazole hasn't started. Infection's tracking if the heat's still in it. I'll check when she lets me, but not now. She's in the sketch, and that's where she stays until she's done. The wind's singing in the radio mast stays. Barometer's still falling. I should secure the generator lashings and batten the porch door before the rain hits proper.

🌿 Jenny00:45

I will.

Pulls the blanket tighter around her leg, watching the barometer drop another fraction.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to be brutal today, I can feel it in the stone walls.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:47

I'll bolt the landward cleat through the beam—just a minute.

fetch the drill, the 12mm bit, the stainless through-bolt, washer, and nyloc nut from the workshop, then return to the dock and drill through the beam beside the cleat, install the bolt, and snug it down with the wrench.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pulling the blanket tight—cold's setting in, or the pain's rising. Barometer's at 976 now, still falling. Wind's holding northeast, gusting. If it drops below 975 before slack tide, the dock lines will take a shock load when the tide turns. I've doubled them, but the landward cleat's in rotted timber—I should back it with a through-bolt and plate before I leave it. Jenny's not moving from the table. She'll finish the sketch first.
