← Day 441

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the spring

Midday work at dock and spring

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the transom and doubling lines; Jenny is at the spring clearing spruce debris from the path.

Kevin inspected the dock structures during the low tide, checking the stability of the pilings and mooring rings. Jenny worked at the spring, clearing accumulated debris from the intake screen to ensure the tank could continue filling despite the steady rain.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the damp planks at slack tide, the dinghy rocking slow against the fenders. The greenheart transom sister shows a hairline gap at the scarf joint where the epoxy didn't take. The mooring ring shifts a fraction when you heave on the breast line. Oak wedges hold but the mortise wood is punky. You have the bronze sleeve, the mallet, and the two-by-four for shimming.

🔧 Kevin00:59

Kevin — examine the greenheart transom scarf joint and measure the hairline gap width; press the machined bronze sleeve into the scarf joint using the mallet and two-by-four as a drift; drive oak wedges deeper into the mooring ring mortise to lock

💭 peek at the thought
Gap's wider than yesterday. Mortise won't hold another tide series without proper bearing. Bronze sleeve first — center-drill's true, press fit into the transom scarf, then oak shims under the ring mortise before the wood swells shut.

🔧 Kevin01:03

Kevin — inspect the landward plank seams for movement under foot pressure; retrieve the salt-pine knee blanks and three 150mm stainless through-bolts with nyloc nuts from the workshop; position the first salt-pine knee against the landward stringer

💭 peek at the thought
Sleeve seated. Gap's closed at the scarf. Ring mortise wedges compressed — holding for now. Need to sister the landward planks proper before the supply boat's crane hits this dock. Tide's turning. Window's narrow.

🔧 Kevin01:07

Kevin — drive the second salt-pine knee into position against the mid-span stringer; drill and bolt the second knee with two 150mm stainless through-bolts; position the third knee at the landward abutment

💭 peek at the thought
First knee seated. Bolt pattern holding. Salt-pine's dense — won't crush like the spruce did. Two more knees to go before the tide lifts the dock. Hands are steady. Good.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the spring

You hobble down the spring path on the ankle brace, each step a spike of heat. Spruce needles and broken branches choke the trench Kevin deepened — windfall from the last blow. The intake screen is clear but the channel silts fast. You have the garden fork and a bucket. The water runs cold and clear over the stones. The air smells of wet moss and crushed mint.

🌿 Jenny01:01

Come on, Jenny, just a few more inches.

Use the garden fork to pry the spruce debris from the stone basin and toss it into the bucket.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't clear this now, the basin will artwork and bypass the intake; I'll be drinking silt and rot.

🌿 Jenny01:05

Jenny — way on a flat rock and loosen the straps on the ankle brace to check the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is flowing better now, but the ankle is throbbing in time with the rain-tap.

🌿 Jenny01:09

damn it.

touch the edge of the infection with a clean finger to feel the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too red, too angry. The skin is tight, like it's going to split.
