Night watch and radio schedule

Full dark now. Rain still coming hard. The clock on the radio shelf reads 2015. Kevin has the shortwave ready for the 0400 and 1600 schedule — though the battery is dead and the aerial insulator shattered. Jenny sleeps fitfully on the bunk, ankle elevated. The generator sits silent outside. The tide is high and rising. A fish run moves through the shallows off the dock, unseen in the dark.

The warm rain continues to fall in heavy lulls, drumming against the cottage roof. Kevin has returned from the generator, having successfully fashioned a new starter cord from the spare half-inch rope found in the flooded crate. Inside, Jenny lies in a feverish sleep, the redness on her calf marked by the pen as she watches the shifting shadows of the radio mast against the damp wall.

🔧 Kevin04:13

Kevin — check generator oil level and inspect starter cord housing for repair with spare rope from waterlogged crate. Then sit with notebook and log: 2015 — tide high rising, rain heavy, barometer 984 rising, Jenny feverish sleep, radio dead, dock

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's not letting up and the tide's still pushing. Jenny's breathing ragged in her sleep — fever maybe, or just pain. Radio's dead weight without battery or insulator. I should check the generator oil again, maybe try the pull cord repair with the spare starter rope in the crate. But the dock's mooring ring held through high water with the oak wedges. That's something. Tom's frequency at 0400. I'll key it anyway.

🌿 Jenny04:13

Jenny — reach out to find the pen and carefully mark the current edge of the redness on my calf, then pull the blanket up over my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line hasn't moved, but the heat in my skin is pulsing. If the fever spikes again, I won't be able to open the tin.

🔧 Kevin04:14

Kevin — wet a clean cloth in the cool water bucket, wring it out, and lay it across Jenny's forehead. Then step outside to the generator, check oil, and examine the starter cord housing for repair.

💭 peek at the thought
She marked it. Good. Means she's tracking it herself now. The line was mid-calf at 1800. If it's past the knee by morning, I up the metronidazole and call the medevac on the VHF — battery or no battery, I'll make it work. She pulled the blanket up. Cold. Fever climbing. I'll wet a cloth for her forehead after I check the generator.

🌿 Jenny04:15

(Soft exhale)

Close my eyes and focus on the rhythm of the rain on the roof, counting the beats of the throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The cloth is cold for a second, but the skin is still fire. I need to stay awake long enough to watch the line.

🔧 Kevin04:16

Kevin — step out onto the porch, pull the generator cover back, check oil dipstick, then inspect the recoil housing — see if the spare half-inch rope from the crate can be knotted and wound as a starter cord replacement.

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting. Measuring the pain in heartbeats. That's how I used to time a misfiring cylinder — by the shake in the deck plates. She's tougher than she lets on. The cloth'll warm fast in this heat. I'll swap it in a few minutes. First, generator.

🌿 Jenny04:17

(Quietly)

Shift my weight to avoid pressing the ankle, flinching at the movement, watching the shadow of the radio move on the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out in the wet while I'm in here melting from fever. If that generator fails, we're in the dark for good.
