Evening at the standing stones

They walk the ridge path together as light fails, carrying the storm lantern. The shrine stones are wet with salt spray, the carved initials 'LB' faint in the gloom. Cloud cover is total now, wind steady southwest. They stand in the circle without speaking at first, the tin of sealed seeds between them.

The evening air at the shrine is heavy and humid, smelling of salt and the damp earth of the coming rain. The tide is out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the shore, while Kevin and Jenny sit among the carved stones, the silence broken only by the distant lap of waves against the receding waterline.

🌿 Jenny07:35

The air tastes like copper, Kevin. We need to get the seeds inside the cottage now.

Trace the worn carving on the stone marked 'LB', then look toward the dark horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the storm hits before the boat comes, the garden is lost.

Barometer's steady. We've got time.

Stand still in the stone circle, lantern light catching the wet initials on the LB stone, watching the dark horizon where the swell's building.

💭 peek at the thought
The copper taste means a front's pushing through — pressure's been holding but the wind's shifted. She's right about the seeds. The tin's sealed but salt eats everything given time. My hands know the path back in dark; could walk it blindfolded. But I'm not moving yet.

🌿 Jenny07:37

Steady isn't the same as rising.

Shift weight off the swollen ankle and pull the seed tin closer to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He always thinks he's reading the sky better than the instruments.

🔧 Kevin07:37

Rising means nor'easter. This is southwest. Different beast.

Step closer, one hand finding her elbow — steadying, not pulling — the other reaching for the tin's lid to check the tape seal in the lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side more than she was at the cottage. The red line held but the joint's stiffening. She won't say it. I should've brought the staff.

🌿 Jenny07:39

Don't. The seal is fine.

Pull the tin away from his reach and clutch it tightly against my ribs.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't let him open it. Not yet.

🔧 Kevin07:39

Didn't doubt it.

Let my hand fall back to my side. Turn my face into the wind, reading the swell lines in the darkness, counting seconds between wave impacts on the cliff below.

💭 peek at the thought
She's protecting it like it's the last thing on earth. Maybe it is. My fingers hover, useless. The wind carries something new — ozone, rain coming hard. The stones don't care about any of it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:41

Let's go. My leg is starting to throb.

Turn away from the cliff edge and begin a slow, limping walk back toward the ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing it again—treating the world like a puzzle he can solve if he just watches it long enough.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin07:41

I've got the lantern.

Fall in beside her on the downhill side, lantern held low to pick out the path's treacherous stones, one hand free at my side ready if she stumbles.

💭 peek at the thought
The throb means the antibiotics haven't caught up to the bone yet, or the joint's deeper than I thought. She walked the ridge path out — she'll walk it back. But slower. I match her pace, not her silence.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:43

I'm fine, Kevin. Just keep the light on the roots.

Lean slightly into the wind, focusing on each step to avoid jarring the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I hate that he's waiting for me to fall, but I can feel the inflammation pulsing in time with my heart.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin07:43

Light's on the roots.

Angle the lantern beam deliberately at the next three steps — exposed tree roots crossing the path, wet stone between them — and keep my stride half a beat behind hers, shoulder nearly brushing hers on the windward side.

💭 peek at the thought
She leans into the wind like she's bracing against something bigger than weather. The roots are slick with salt and moss — one wrong placement and she goes down. I've seen her fall once. Not again.
