Dawn at the garden

Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden wall as the first heavy drops of rain begin to fall against the overcast sky.

Jenny attempted to saw the fallen tree blocking the spring path using the bow saw, but the blade bound deep in the wood. Kevin watched as she struggled with the stubborn trunk, failing to clear the obstruction despite the morning effort.

Spring path still blocked. Tree's not moving itself.

lean the bow saw against the garden wall and wipe rain from my forehead

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's here earlier than the barometer suggested. Good — settles the dust, keeps the seedlings damp. Jenny's favoring the left side again. She thinks I don't notice.

🌿 Jenny08:02

I'll clear the branch. Just give me the saw.

Shift my weight to my good leg and reach for the fallen cedar.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to the spring, the salt water won't work and this infection will reach the bone.

🔧 Kevin08:03

Take it. But the trunk's forty centimeters through. You'll be at it all morning.

hand her the bow saw handle-first, keeping my grip on the blade end a moment longer than necessary

💭 peek at the thought
She'll do it if I let her. Ankle's not right. But she won't take no for an answer — not today, not with the rain coming down like this.

🌿 Jenny08:03

I've catalogued forests larger than this island, Kevin. I think I can handle a cedar.

Take the saw and limp toward the blockage.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty centimeters. He thinks I'm fragile. I can handle a trunk; it's the throbbing in my calf that's the problem.

🔧 Kevin08:05

First cut on the compression side. Let the weight open the kerf, don't force it.

follow three paces behind, hands loose at my sides, close enough to catch the saw if the bind takes it

💭 peek at the thought
Forests don't fall on you. Forty centimeters of wet cedar does. She's already breathing harder just walking there.

🌿 Jenny08:05

I know how to cut wood.

Kneel by the trunk and start the first notch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking to me like I've never seen a blade before. I know where the compression is. Everything is.

🔧 Kevin08:07

Wedge the offcut. Soon as the kerf opens.

crouch down in the wet grass, pulling two greenheart offcuts from my coat pocket and setting them within her reach

💭 peek at the thought
She does. Watched her work through a season of firewood last winter — steady, patient. But not on a bad ankle, not in driving rain, not with a trunk that'll pinch the blade the moment the weight shifts.

🌿 Jenny08:07

Thanks.

Saw deeper into the compression side, then reach for one of the greenheart wedges.

💭 peek at the thought
He's anticipating every move. It's helpful, but it feels like being managed.
