Evening Low Tide

The tide is nearing its lowest point. Kevin returns to the cottage to peel off his damp boots as Jenny calls him for dinner.

The tide is fully out, exposing the northern rock shelf and a deep crevice hidden beneath the waterline. The air is growing heavy, losing the dry heat of the afternoon as the clouds thicken over the horizon. Kevin and Jenny are at the old shrine, the salt spray cooling on their skin before the coming rain.

🔧 Kevin10:35

On my way in. Just drying off.

walk to cottage, remove boots, place them near stove to dry, enter kitchen for dinner

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s low enough to check the spring path tomorrow. Boots are soaked through—need to dry them by the stove. Jenny’s calling for dinner; she’s been quiet since the ankle debridement, but she’s eating. That’s a good sign.

🌿 Jenny10:35

Careful with the boots, don't let them scorch. Dinner's ready.

Ladle the limpet broth into two tin mugs and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He smells like wet greenheart and salt. I can't tell if I'm relieved he's back or just hungry.

🔧 Kevin10:37

Thanks. Smells good.

sit at table, take mug, drink broth

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me closer than she lets on. The broth smells clean—limpet, sea beet, a bit of corned beef fat. Good food. She's moving better on the ankle, no limp at the stove.

🌿 Jenny10:37

Slow down. It's not going anywhere.

Sit down slowly, favoring the ankle, and take a small sip of the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating too fast. He doesn't even taste the brine.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:39

Mm.

sip broth slowly, feel warmth spread through chest, set mug down, pick up spoon for the solids

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Always is. The broth's hot, salty, rich with fat—exactly what a body needs after a day in the salt. She's not pushing the ankle, not pushing words. Just eating. That's how we work.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:39

I managed to get the sea beet sketches laid out. They're almost dry.

Lean back in the chair and watch him eat, gripping my own mug for warmth.

💭 peek at the thought
I wonder if he can tell how much I'm shaking. I feel like a piece of wet parchment.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:41

Good. Let me see them when you're ready.

finish broth, set spoon down, wipe mouth with back of hand, wait for her to continue

💭 peek at the thought
She's been at the notebook again. Sea beet sketches—she's tracking the salt glands, the way the leaves curl in dry air. She does this quiet work while I'm out wrestling with bolts and diesel. Always noticing what I miss.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:41

They're just on the table. I've been focusing on the salt glands... the ridge population is completely different from the tide pools.

Gesture vaguely toward the drying sketches with a tired hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it like a chore. "Let me see them." Like he's checking a report rather than looking at my work.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:43

Different how?

lean back, mug in hand, eyes on her face not the sketches

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge population different from tide pools. She's seeing patterns in the salt glands I'd never catch—structure, density, how they adapt. She does this: sits with a plant for hours, draws what it's doing. I turn bolts. We both keep the island alive.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:43

The glands are more concentrated, smaller. They've adapted to the wind-blown spray rather than the immersion. It's a distinct morphological shift.

Shift slightly in the chair, pulling my ankle further back under the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He isn't even looking at the paper. He's looking at me. Why is he looking at me like that?

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:45

Huh. Smart plants.

finish mug, set it down hard on the table, push chair back slightly

💭 peek at the thought
Wind-blown spray versus immersion. She's talking about adaptation—how a thing changes its shape to survive where it's put. Concentrated glands, smaller, tighter. She knows this language. I know torque specs and fuel ratios. Different dialects for the same truth: you fit the place or you don't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:45

They're not smart, Kevin. They're evolved.

Look down into the remaining broth, tracing the rim of the tin mug with a finger.

💭 peek at the thought
"Smart plants." That's all he has for it. He doesn't want the science; he just wants the conversation to be over.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:47

Right. Evolved.

stand, take both mugs to the sink, run cold water over them, set them to drain

💭 peek at the thought
She's correcting me. Gentle, precise. Evolved, not smart. The distinction matters to her. She traces the mug rim—same finger that sketches salt glands, that rewrapped my ankle, that handed me tea at 0200 without asking. She doesn't say the things that sit between us. Neither do I.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:47

Jenny — reach out and pull the sketches closer to me, shielding the paper from the spray of the sink.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so dismissive. It's like I'm talking to the weather. At least the weather actually reacts.
