Morning rain and dejection

Warm rain drums against the roof while Kevin monitors the kettle on the stove. Jenny sits at the table, spreading out the damp island notebook to de-salt while she watches her ankle.

At 0400 Kevin keyed the mic and spoke into the shortwave despite the shattered insulator, sending a personal message toward Tom's frequency. Jenny examined her ankle and found the infection line stable with no new heat, though swelling remains. Kevin then walked to the dock at slack tide and inspected the transom sleeve and greenheart sister plank, finding the sleeve solid but the sister plank still floating on a scoured void beneath the beam.

🌿 Jenny10:58

Is the kettle whistling?

Rub the edges of the notebook with a dry cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; if this storm breaks before the boat comes, I'm stuck with this leg and this silence.

Nearly. Give it another minute.

lift the kettle lid to check the steam, then set it back on the stove to finish heating. After, I'll wipe down the radio shelf and get the mic ready for 0400.

💭 peek at the thought
The kettle's near singing. Jenny's notebook is damp from last night's rain, her ankle's quiet today but I know better than to trust that. I should check the transom sleeve before the tide turns—come-along's ready, slack tide at 0530. And I still need to say the rest on the radio at 0400: birthday, the argument, that I'm still listening. The static's been talking too long.

🌿 Jenny10:59

Don't bother with the mic yet. The insulator is still a gamble.

Carefully peel back the bandage on the ankle to check the infection line.

💭 peek at the thought
He's playing the diligent soldier again. It's easier to wipe a shelf than to actually talk to me.

🔧 Kevin11:01

I know. But I'll do it anyway. At 0400. Just to say it.

pour the hot water from the kettle into a bowl, then carry it to Jenny at the table to soak a clean cloth for her ankle. After, I'll check the radio insulator—see if the tape's holding, if the ceramic's cracked further—and then step outside

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the insulator's shattered, tape holding it together by hope. But I keyed the mic at 0400 yesterday, same as I will today. Not for the signal, not really. For the act of saying it out loud: birthday, the argument, that I'm still listening. If she won't speak the date, I will. Her ankle's peeled back—red line's still there, but not spreading. I should recheck the transom sleeve at slack tide, come-along ready. The dock's held so far, but that sister plank shifted two millimetres yesterday. Can't let it bite.

🌿 Jenny11:01

The red is holding, but it's not moving.

Trace the edge of the swelling with a cold finger to feel for heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a scheduled check-in fixes the gap. It's just noise on the radio.

🔧 Kevin11:03

Good. Keep tracing it. If it warms, tell me.

refill the bowl with hot water, wring out the cloth, and lay it gently on Jenny's ankle to keep the poultice warm. Then I'll check the radio mast—insulator's taped, but I'll see if the coax needs resealing—and after, I'll walk to the dock w

💭 peek at the thought
No heat. That's good. The line's holding, not advancing. Jenny's watching it close—she knows the signs better than I do. Still, I should keep the antibiotic course going, keep the poultice clean. The transom sleeve check at 0530 slack tide can't wait—come-along's rigged, sister plank's already shifted two millimetres. If it moves again under load, the bolts'll shear. And the radio at 0400—I'll key the mic. Not for Tom. Not really. For the version of me that still believes saying it might make it true.
