The storm approaches

The air grows heavy, and the first gust of wind begins to rattle the cottage roof.

Kevin secured the garden tarp against rising wind and rain, then checked the dinghy mooring lines and storm anchor at the dock. Jenny examined her infected ankle wound at the kitchen table, noting persistent inflammation despite antibiotic treatment.

🔧 Kevin14:21

Kevin — walk to the porch door and look out at the dock and garden, assessing what needs tying down first.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer's been dropping all day. Need to secure the dinghy and check the garden tarp before it tears.

🌿 Jenny14:21

The wind is bunching, Kevin. Secure the tarp.

Set the mug down and stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. That storm is going to be a mess.

🔧 Kevin14:23

On it.

Pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab mallet and spare timber strips from the porch, head out to the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tarp's already loose at one corner. If it goes, the seedlings go with it. Move now.

🌿 Jenny14:23

Watch the north corner! The wind is catching it!

Move to the kitchen to grab the heavy-duty twine and check the barometer one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get the stakes deep enough, the seedlings will be gone by morning.

🔧 Kevin14:25

Holding it.

Run to the garden, throw my weight on the flapping tarp corner, shove a cedar wedge under it to hold it flat, then start tying it down with the twine Jenny's bringing.

💭 peek at the thought
North corner's lifting—got to weight it down before it rips. She's getting twine; I'll brace it.

🌿 Jenny14:25

I'm coming! Double the knots!

Grab the twine and the first aid kit, step out onto the porch, the wind already biting my face.

💭 peek at the thought
It's at 982 and still falling. This is going to be a brutal one.

🔧 Kevin14:27

Take the twine—I'll anchor the corner, you run it to the stake.

Wrench the tarp corner tight against the ground, jam a second cedar wedge in beside the first to lock it, then hand Jenny the twine to tie it off to the oak stake.

💭 peek at the thought
She's out there with me—good. Wind's strong, but we can lash it. Need to get this corner sealed before the gusts tear it loose.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny14:27

I've got it! Wrap it three times!

Take the twine and lunge toward the stake, my ankle throbbing with every step on the slick mud.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming now. If that stake doesn't hold, the whole sheet goes.

🔧 Kevin14:29

Good. Pull it hard.

Stomp on the tarp to keep it flat while Jenny wraps the twine three times around the stake, then I tie off the end with a clinch knot and yank it tight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow but she's got it. Three wraps—tight and neat. If this holds, the tarp stays. Wind's screaming now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny14:29

It's tight. Now get inside before it really starts.

Cut the twine and head back toward the cottage, wincing as the rain hits my face.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding, for now. But the barometer is still lying to me.

🔧 Kevin14:31

Right behind you.

Follow Jenny up the porch steps, pause to grab the mallet and spare timber strips, then head for the dock to check the dinghy mooring and storm anchor.

💭 peek at the thought
North corner's holding. Rain's turning to sheets. Need to check the dinghy lines and the generator lashings before the real blow hits.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:32

Close the door, Kevin! The spray is getting in!

Step inside and bolt the heavy wood door, leaning against the whitewashed stone to catch my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning north. If the dinghy goes, I'm stuck on this rock.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:33

Kevin — jog down the slick path to the dock, headlamp beam cutting the rain, check the doubled stern spring, the breast line, and the storm anchor warp for chafe or slip.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's shut. She's safe inside. Now the dinghy—if the mooring parts, we lose the only way off this rock. Storm anchor's set, but the lines need checking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:33

I'm going to the kitchen. I need to see the wound again.

Sit at the kitchen table, peel the damp bandage off my ankle, and hiss through the teeth.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure in my ankle is pulsing. I can feel the heatradi off the skin.
