← Day 455

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday Heat and Low Tide

Kevin is at the dock working on the broken wood, while Jenny remains on the north cliffs.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You use a larger chisel to try and square the jagged hole left by the drill, risking splitting the entire beam.

🔧 Kevin13:55

Kevin — set the chisel aside, retrieve the 12mm auger bit from the workshop, bore a clean overlapping hole to true up the mortise, then test-fit the bronze sleeve and doubler plate before the tide turns

💭 peek at the thought
The bit's gone. The hole's ragged. If I drive a chisel into wet greenheart now I'll split the beam clean through and we're back to sistering the whole piling. But the supply boat's due in nine days and the ring's got to hold. Only one way to square this without tearing the grain.

🔧 Kevin13:59

Kevin — wipe the salt and sawdust off the bolts, step back and watch the ring under the first real load as the tide pushes against the dock, then walk back to the cottage for water and a bite before the afternoon heat settles in

💭 peek at the thought
The auger cut clean. The mortise is square now, the bronze sleeve seats flush, and the doubler plate draws up tight against the greenheart. Four 150mm stainless through-bolts, nyloc nuts torqued to 35Nm. The ring doesn't move when I heave on it. That's one less thing to fail when the supply boat comes alongside.

🔧 Kevin14:03

Kevin — walk up to the cottage, pull a tin of corned beef and the last of the limpets from the pot, eat standing at the bench while scanning the seed trays for new fungal fuzz, then bag any infected cells for burning

💭 peek at the thought
The ring held solid under the tide's push. No shift, no groan from the timber. The repair's done proper. Water tank's full, belly's empty, and the afternoon's turning thick. Jenny's still at the cliffs. Best eat something and check the seed trays before the damp brings more damping-off.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You watch the tangle of driftwood, wondering if anything useful has washed up from the last night's tide.

🌿 Jenny13:57

Come on, give me something useful today.

Stand up slowly, shifting weight away from the ankle, and scan the shoreline for broken wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's any good cedar in that mess, I could fix the garden gate, but my leg is screaming at me.

🌿 Jenny14:01

Jenny — squat down to pick up a piece of salt-bleached driftwood, turning it over to check for rot.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is getting into everything, even the cuts in my skin.

🌿 Jenny14:05

damn it.

Drop the wood back own the sand and wipe my gritty hands on my trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
This piece is too soft for the gate, just kindling for the stove.
