Night watch and radio call

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table in the lamplight, tin mugs steaming. The shortwave radio sits on the shelf, its new insulator sealed with self-amalgamating tape. Outside, rain hammers the roof and the barometer holds at 976 hPa. It is 0350. Kevin reaches for the microphone.

Kevin keyed the shortwave radio at exactly 0400 to report their status to Tom, while Jenny removed the mint poultice from her ankle to check for spreading redness. The barometric pressure continues to drop as the clouds thicken overhead.

🌿 Jenny17:42

Wait, Kevin. The pressure is still dropping.

Take a sip of the warm own and rub the side of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he calls now, it'll just be static and the storm-front warnings.

It's 0350. I'll key it at the hour.

hold the microphone, thumb on the transmit button, watching the second hand of the wall clock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 976 and still falling means this thing hasn't bottomed out. But Tom's birthday was three days ago and I've called four times now. The radio works — I fixed the ground rod myself. If I don't try at 0400, I'm making excuses.

🌿 Jenny17:43

Just make sure the ground rod is clear this time.

Peel back the poultice to check for new red streaks.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is an eternity when your leg is screaming at you.

🔧 Kevin17:43

Ground's good. Solder held.

keep thumb on the transmit button, eyes flicking to the clock — 0358 — then to her ankle where the poultice is peeled back

💭 peek at the thought
Ground rod's clean — I soldered the clamp myself yesterday. But she's watching her leg, not me, and that red line was at her knee yesterday.

🌿 Jenny17:45

Almost there. Get ready.

Trace the edge of the redness with a clean finger.

💭 peek at the thought
The minute is moving too slow, but the infection is moving fast.

🔧 Kevin17:45

Kevin — press the transmit button at the exact turn to 0400, voice flat — "This is Kevin, Sorrel Island. Receiving on Tom's frequency. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping it. Same way I'd trace a hairline fracture in a cylinder head — precise, clinical, not letting herself feel it. The line's past the knee now. I can see it from here.
