← Day 464

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday dock check and garden rounds

Kevin walks to the dock to inspect the mooring ring reinforcement and the crate in the surf; Jenny moves to the garden to check seedling trays and the tarp over the beds.

Kevin towed the waterlogged crate from the surf to the beach and secured it above the high-water mark. Jenny removed damping-off seedlings from the garden trays, bagged them for burning, and returned to the cottage to check on the heirloom seed tin.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the dock planking, the rising tide slapping the pilings. The mooring ring holds fast with its four cedar wedges and the steel doubler plate bolted through. The wooden crate bobs twenty metres out, rolling in the surf — salt-crusted, heavy, labels unreadable. You have the crowbar and a coil of new half-inch rope at your feet.

🔧 Kevin23:45

Kevin — walk to the end of the dock, coil rope over shoulder, take crowbar in hand, push off in the dinghy toward the crate

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's riding high — empty or sealed tight. Either way, it's coming in on this tide if I don't go get it. Rope and crowbar'll do.

🔧 Kevin23:49

Kevin — maneuver the dinghy alongside the crate, hook the crowbar under a rope handle, lash the new half-inch rope through the crate's rusted hasp and around the dinghy's forward cleat, then throttle slow toward the beach

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy handles clean with the Yanmar. Crate's heavier than it looked — sits low. Gonna need the come-along or a good swell to get it up the beach.

🔧 Kevin23:53

Kevin — kill the Yanmar, step out into the shallows, drag the crate up the shingle past the high-water mark using the rope, then secure it with a timber chock against rolling back

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's beached. Tide'll lift it again in an hour if I don't get it above the line. Back's going to feel this tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You step into the garden between the raised beds, the shade cloth snapping lightly in the breeze. The tomato seedlings stand straight beside their stakes; three pepper cells and two lettuce cells show the white fuzz of damping-off at the soil line. The heavy tarp corners are weighted with oak stakes and timber strips. You carry a trowel and a newspaper bag for the diseased cells.

🌿 Jenny23:43

Come on, you little bastards.

Kneels in the dirt and carefully extracts the damping-off seedlings, placing them into the newspaper bag.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot is moving faster than the forecast. If I don't pull these now, the whole bed is gone by the high tide.

🌿 Jenny23:47

way there.

Wipes the grit from the trowel and limps back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide. I need to check if the poultice is holding before the swelling peaks.

🌿 Jenny23:51

Kevin?

Steps into the cottage and checks the kitchen shelf for the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. If this storm hits hard, I need to make sure the seed tin is dry inside.
