Morning Heat and Seed Drying

Jenny sits on the stone garden wall, her ankle elevated while the heavy air hangs still. Kevin spreads the damp heirloom seeds across a flat tarp, checking the moisture levels as the dry season heat rises.

The morning air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and damp earth. The tide is out at its lowest, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock. Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden as the mist still clings to the heirloom seed seedlings.

Seeds'll cook if we leave them out here past ten. Going to shift them to the porch shade. Ankle holding?

gather the tarp corners carefully, keeping seeds contained, and carry them toward the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds are drying too fast in this heat. Need to move them to shade before they lose viability. Jenny's ankle looks stable but the swelling hasn't dropped — poultice needs changing at noon.

🌿 Jenny00:23

It's fine. Just don't let them touch the stone, the salt is wicked.

winces as she shifts, adjusting the mint poultice wrap around her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful, but the humidity is still going to rot the whole lot before I can get them in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin00:23

Got it. I'll line the tarp with that old sail scrap from the dinghy locker — keeps the salt out. Want me to refresh the poultice while I'm at it?

walk to the dinghy locker, retrieve the damp sail scrap, and spread it flat on the porch boards before unloading the seeds onto it

💭 peek at the thought
Stone wall's leaching salt into the tarp — she's right. Need a barrier. Also, her breath hitched when she moved; infection's still deep. Poultice needs fresh mint and gauze soon.

🌿 Jenny00:25

No, wait. I need to check the swelling first. It's throbbing again.

reaches for the notebook on the bench, tracing a finger over the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
The sail scrap is still damp, it'll just transfer moisture, but it's better than the stone.

🔧 Kevin00:25

Leave the book. Show me.

crouch beside the wall, peel back the gauze edge with clean fingers, and check the infection line against the pen mark from dawn

💭 peek at the thought
She's avoiding looking at the ankle. Throbbing means pressure building — could be abscess tracking. Need to see it clean, measure the red line from this morning. Notebook can wait.
