The eve of the storm

The wind begins to pick up against the cottage shutters, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof.

Kevin secured the dinghy with double stern springs and a breast line to prepare for the surge. Jenny moved the heirloom seed tin closer to the stove to protect it from the rising damp. They retreated inside the cottage as the wind and rain picked up.

It's really coming down now.

Move the heirloom seed tin closer to the wood stove to catch the warmth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop, those seeds will rot before theyization see the soil.

Aye. Wind's westing too — surge'll be up the dock by midnight.

stand, pull on oilskin jacket, grab LED headlamp from shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer still rising but the wind's backing west — that surge will hit the dock hard at high tide. Need to check the mooring ring wedges again before dark, and the generator's only got four days of fuel at this burn rate. Jenny's ankle held the line today, that's something.

Make sure the dinghy is double-cleated the line.

Unroll the mint poultice from my ankle to check the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to check the moorings again before the surge gets too high.

Done at first light. Storm anchor off the bow, fifty metres warp. Stern springs doubled with the new rope, breast line on the piling. She'll ride it out.

step onto porch, pull door shut behind me, head down the path toward dock

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's already got the storm anchor out bow and doubled stern lines with the new half-inch three-strand. She's asking because she knows I'll check anyway — or because she needs to say something practical while her ankle throbs.
