Night watch and radio schedule
The generator hums on the porch, shortwave tuned to 8764 kHz. Kevin sits with the radio log, Jenny dozes in the chair by the stove, leg elevated on a cushion. The tin of heirloom seeds airs on the table. Rain hammers the roof. The barometer holds at 999 hPa. Somewhere in the pantry, a trap snaps shut.
The heavy cloud cover holds steady as the pressure begins to climb, though the air remains thick with wet season humidity. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling limpets and medicinal herbs fills the small space. The tide is rising steadily against the pilings of the dock, the water lapping rhythmically beneath the floorboards.
(whispering in sleep) Check the radio again, Kevin...
Reach for the notebook to mark the leading edge of the red tracking with a pen.

(quietly) I'm listening. Go back to sleep.
glance at the shortwave — static only — then stand, grab the flashlight, and walk to the pantry to check the trap

(calling out without opening my eyes) The line's moved up another centimeter, Kevin. I'm taking the second dose now.
Unwrap the gauze more deliberately, feeling for the hot spots, then take the antibiotic with the lukewarm water from the tin mug. Mark the new tracking line in the notebook with the ballpoint pen.
