The Rising Tide and Pressure

The flat sky darkens as cloud cover thickens, and the tide continues to lap against the dock pilings. The smell of salt and ozone increases as Jenny prepares to check the radio in three hours.

Kevin called a mayday on 2182 kHz but the shortwave radio received only a garbled news fragment about Starlink and Ukraine, with no coastguard reply. The barometer continues falling to 996 hPa as the tide peaks high against the dock.

🌿 Jenny02:21

Jenny — trace the furthest edge of the redness with a pencil, then note the time and measurement in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line is moving. If it hits the knee by the time the boat comes, I'm not walking to the spring.

🔧 Kevin02:21

How far since noon?

sit on the porch step, wrench across knees, watching the treeline for wind shift

💭 peek at the thought
She's measuring the spread like she's logging a transect. Treating her own body as data. The line's past her calf now — that's hours, not days. I should've called the coastguard this morning. Should've made the decision for her.

🌿 Jenny02:23

An inch. It's still getting warmer.

Tighten the bandage on the ankle and wince as the throbbing spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
An inch. Maybe two. It's faster than the tide today.

🔧 Kevin02:23

You need to decide. Right now. Mayday on 2182 — coastguard, helicopter, mainland hospital. Or we wait for a boat that might not show and you lose the leg, or worse.

stand up from the porch step, wipe hands on trousers, walk to the radio shelf and switch on the shortwave

💭 peek at the thought
An inch in six hours. That's not slowing. She's out of antibiotics, out of options, and the supply boat's seven days out if it comes at all. The barometer's falling. I said I'd call mayday if the pressure dropped. It's dropping.

🌿 Jenny02:25

Give me one hour. If it crosses the mark, then I'll call.

Look at the red tracking on the skin, then grip the pencil until knuckles white.

💭 peek at the thought
If I lose the leg, I can't plant the seeds. But if I call them now, I don't come back.

🔧 Kevin02:25

One hour. I'll set a timer.

pull the kettle off the stove, pour water into two tin mugs, set one beside her on the porch rail, grip the other tight enough to burn

💭 peek at the thought
One hour. She's bargaining with sepsis. The mark she drew at noon — if the red line crosses it, she'll call. But by the time it crosses, the bacteria are already in her bloodstream. I know this. She knows this. She's a scientist. She's treating it like an experiment with a control group. There is no control group. There's just her, and me, and a radio that works, and a helicopter that might come if I key the mic right now.

🌿 Jenny02:27

Thanks.

Watch the steam rise from the mug, then stare at the red line on my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat from the leg isradi. I can feel the pulse in my shin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:27

Twenty minutes.

lean against the porch post, mug in hand, eyes on the pencil mark on her calf

💭 peek at the thought
She's not drinking. She's watching the line like it's a tide gauge. The steam curls up into the flat light. My mug's burning my palm but I don't put it down. Forty minutes ago she said one hour. Now it's thirty-nine. The barometer on the shelf reads 996 and falling. I can hear the generator chugging from the shed — two hours on, four off, saving fuel for the radio schedule. Saving fuel for a schedule that doesn't matter if she dies here.

🌿 Jenny02:29

It's moving.

Trace the new edge of the artwork, then wince as the pencil touches the hot skin.

💭 peek at the thought
It's already past the mark. The tracking is reaching for the knee.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:29

Time's up.

set the mug down hard on the porch rail, stride to the radio shelf, key the mic on 2182

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving. She just said it's moving. She traced the new edge — the infection spread while we sat here. While I waited for her permission to save her life. The pencil touched hot skin and she winced and I'm still holding this mug like it's an anchor. Twenty minutes she gave me. It's been maybe five. The line moved in five minutes. Sepsis doesn't negotiate. The coastguard doesn't care about our agreement. The helicopter doesn't wait for the mark.
