The Approach of the Storm

The air inside the cottage is heavy with the smell of salt and drying herbs. Outside, the first heavy drops of rain begin to tap against the leaky shutter.

The air is heavy and humid, smelling of salt and coming rain as the sky thickens. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and tide pools along the island's edge. Inside the cottage, the barometer continues its slow decline to 987 hPa, signaling the approaching storm.

🌿 Jenny05:41

The roof is leaking again.

reaches for the galvanized bucket to catch the drip from the shutter.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. If the boat doesn't come in four days, I'm going to run out of gauze.

🔧 Kevin05:43

Ridge beam or the porch overhang?

walk to the porch and look up at the shutter hinge line where water's tracking down the wall

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's early. Barometer was right. Bucket's already under the worst leak — she's just moving it to the shutter drip. Means the roof seams are weeping again. Need to check the ridge beam flashing before dark.

🌿 Jenny05:43

The ridge beam. The water is getting right through the seam.

winces as she shifts her weight, her ankle throbbing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
It's the ridge beam. The wood is rotting where I can't see it.

🔧 Kevin05:45

I'll get the ladder and the spare tarp. You sit.

fetch the extension ladder from the woodshed and the heavy-duty tarp roll from the porch corner

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge beam seam. That's the tar paper we patched last autumn — knew it wouldn't hold a proper blow. She's favouring the left leg hard. Infection line hasn't moved but the swelling's not down either. Need to get up there before the wind tears the patch wide open.

🌿 Jenny05:45

Be careful with the ladder, the wood is slick.

inks into the kitchen chair, rubbing the heat of her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the storm gets bad, the tarp won't save the seed tin.

🔧 Kevin05:47

Rungs are salt-slick. I'll test each one. Keep the foot up — heart level.

lean the ladder against the cottage wall, grip the bottom rung with both hands, and bounce weight on it to test the spruce dowel repair

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — rungs'll be greasy with salt and rain. Lost a rung on this ladder two winters ago, patched it with a spruce dowel and epoxy. Held so far. Ankle's radiating heat through the bandage. She needs the leg up, not rubbing it.

🌿 Jenny05:47

Don't fall. I need that roof to actually stay dry.

props her ankle up on a stack of notebooks, watching the barometer needle drop another fraction.

💭 peek at the thought
The ladder is holding, but the wind is picking up.

🔧 Kevin05:49

Not planning to. Hand me the batten strips and the hammer from the shelf.

climb the ladder with the tarp roll over one shoulder, moving slow, testing each rung

💭 peek at the thought
Dowel holds. Ladder's solid. Wind's picking up — can feel it buffeting the cottage walls. Tarp's heavy, wet canvas'll be a bastard to manhandle up there alone. But the ridge beam seam runs the full length. If it goes, the whole roof structure rots inside a season. She's watching the barometer like it's a verdict.

🌿 Jenny05:49

Here. Just watch the edge, the wind is shifting.

hands him the wooden strips and the hammer, watching him as he reaches the eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked if the wind catches that tarp.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:51

Got it. Holding the ladder?

unroll the tarp along the ridge beam, pull it tight over the leaking seam, and nail the first batten strip into the windward side with two quick hammer strikes

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's swinging south-west — bad angle for the ridge. Tarp'll want to sail. Need to batten the windward edge first, then work down the lee side. Hammer's light, strips are greenheart offcuts, tough but splintery. She's holding the ladder base with one hand, knuckles white. Good woman.
