The Storm Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the roof just as the tide reaches its peak. The dock groans under the rising salt swell.

The air has turned heavy and humid, the flat sky darkening into a bruised purple as the pressure drops steadily. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks beneath the dock. Inside the cottage, the atmosphere is thick with the smell of woodsmoke and drying salt, matching the tension of the approaching storm.

🌿 Jenny06:33

Kevin! Get inside, now, the tide is already hitting the pilings!

Set the limpets on the stove and check the barometer again.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't hold, the jetty is gone.

Thirty seconds. Getting the tension set so it holds.

Crank the come-along two more hard pulls, lock the ratchet pawl, then move to the dock ladder and climb up to the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The swell's hitting harder than last night — water's already licking the cross-bracing. One more surge and the south piling takes the full hit broadside. Need to get the come-along tension locked before I leave it.

🌿 Jenny06:35

Don't just stand there dripping, check the bolts!

Slam the door shut behind him and limp heavily toward the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ratchet slips, the whole thing goes into the surf.

On it.

Walk to the dock edge, crouch at the seaward bolt clusters on the greenheart sister plank — check each nyloc for movement, tap with the 19mm wrench to confirm bite, then verify the four 150mm through-bolts on the steel doubler plate at the

💭 peek at the thought
Door's shut. Good. She's moving — ankle's holding. Now the bolts.

🌿 Jenny06:37

Kevin, get in! The barometer is at 985!

Grab the notebook and pencil to record the drop.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is rising too fast for him to be safe out there.

🔧 Kevin06:37

Moving.

Turn from the dock edge, climb the porch steps fast, step through the door and pull it shut behind me, latch the storm catch.

💭 peek at the thought
Three millibars in under an hour. That's the threshold. Swell's going to build fast. Bolts can wait — she's right, need to be inside securing the rest.

🌿 Jenny06:39

Get to the stove. You're shivering.

Point a finger at the way and note the reading.

💭 peek at the thought
He's dripping all over my floor and the wind is already screaming.

🔧 Kevin06:39

Aye.

Cross the room to the stove, crouch by the firebox, feed two splits of dry firewood into the glowing coals, push the damper open with the poker, hold hands over the rising heat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Hands are numb, core's dropping. Stove first, then we batten the rest.
