The Approaching Squall

The tide continues to drop, leaving the island's ribs exposed and slippery. The wind picks up from the east, carrying the scent of heavy rain and salt.

Kevin works at the dock during the low tide, inspecting the void beneath the north piling. He measures the tapered greenheart shim, preparing to wedge it into place before the tide returns and the structure shifts. Meanwhile, Jenny sits on the porch, propping her ankle on a crate and focusing on de-salting the sea beet leaves while the sky darkens above them.

🔧 Kevin09:35

North piling's got a void under it. Greenheart sister's floating on nothing. Gotta shim it proper when the water drops more. You want the radio or the dock first?

Walk to the dock with the 10mm through-bolts, washers, nyloc nuts, and the tapered greenheart shim, set up at the north piling mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's out far enough to see the scour under the north piling. Wind's backing east — rain's coming hard. Need the through-bolts driven and the ring solid before the supply boat tries to tie up. Radio check at 0400 still on, but this weather'll eat propagation.

The radio. I haven't even finished de-salting these leaves, and I need to know if Tom is actually coming.

sets the bowl of sea way on the table and limps toward the porch, favoring the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the antenna isn't right, I'm just talking to a ghost, but the dock can't fall apart when the storm hits.

Radio it is. I'll get the aerial sorted. You take the porch — I'll run the coax from the mast.

Walk to the radio mast, uncoil the new spare coax, and begin routing it from the mast base to the cottage porch, securing it against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Radio first. Dock'll wait for low water. She needs this more than the piling needs shims.

🌿 Jenny09:39

Watch the tension on that line, Kevin. I don't want it snapping when the wind shifts.

sits on the porch chair, propping the ankle on a crate, and begins sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast today. Maybe he's trying to outrun the silence between us.

🔧 Kevin09:40

Got it. Drip loops every metre, lashed to the stays. Slack at the mast base for swing.

Form drip loops in the coax at one-metre intervals, lash each to the mast stays with sail twine, leave a service loop at the mast base, then feed the far end through the porch grommet to the radio shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the coax like she watched the mooring bolts. Doesn't miss tension — in line or in people. Good eye. Wind's gusting now, coax wants to kite. Need drip loops and strain relief before it chafes on the bracket.
